Doryman was a disgrace to the title of Bed & Breakfast. The rooms were below average. The outside noise would not let you sleep until 3-4 in the morning. The phones were not functional. The service was awful. And the breakfast was the worst we have ever had. If you are in the mood for bran muffin, cold boiled eggs with out any toast or other bread, and coffee then Doryman is good for you!

“Comfortable and quiet...”

Doryman's Inn Bed & Breakfast Newport Beach

Upon reading some questionable reviews about this hotel, I was hesitant to book it. However, the price was right and you can't beat the location(for the area).
I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness, comfort and quiet of this hotel. I especially like how they keep each room's door open until the guest checks in to that room. When we arrived, we took a peak into the rooms that had open doors to get a glance at what this hotel had to offer.
I had opted for the least expensive room,#5, and was totally satisfied. However, some rooms, #10, are huge! There was a king and a couch that folds out, not to mention a cute sitting table to enjoy the view.
The bed was so cozy with cushiony down comforter.
You can't beat the location. You are on the beach, we layed in bed watching the sun go down on the water. We went out for beers just a block away, and topped this fab experience off with a delicious, elegant meal at 21 Oceanfront (the restaurant downstairs from the hotel).
One small complaint is the breakfast. Down the hall from our room is the tiny breakfast room. There were several muffins/pastries, a plate of fresh fruit, cereal boxes, some bite-size quiches, fresh squeezed OJ and coffee. Food seemed sparse and I couldn't find the "breakfast" staff to answer my questions. This wouldn't be an issue, but I have been to many bed and breakfast hotels and this meets my least expectation of a bed and "breakfast".

“A Beach Flop Masquerading As A B & B”

Doryman's Inn Bed & Breakfast Newport Beach

Nevermind the French bordello meets Wild, Wild West decor, this place plain sucks. It is directly over three bars (one of which has rooftop seating right ouside the windows of the higher numbered rooms) so you cannot go to sleep before 3:00 a.m. But you better get your winks in quickly because waves of trash trucks come through at 7:00 a.m. So, as you teeter on the edge of your sagging bed praying that the mating rituals of the 20-something crowd below will end, all you can think of is Dorothy clicking her heels together and wishing she could go home. On our way out the door expressing our dissatisfaction to the desk clerk we were told "yes, it (the bar noise) is really terrible on the weekends"; would have been nice if they'd been as candid when the reservation was booked.

We decided (at 2:30 a.m.) to leave the next morning. My wife wanted to have the breakfast first. Someone at the inn obviously goes to Costco or Smart & Final regularly to stock up on packaged muffins, frozen quiche and fruit platters. Greasy and unpleasant to say the least.

Overall, we would not stay there again even if they paid us $239 a night.

“They canceled our wedding night reservation...”

So my husband and I booked 2 nights at the Doryman's Inn - our wedding night + the night after. Being a local couple, and having a plethera of out of town guests, we decided to host family at our house the 2nd day. After we toured the hotel, we asked the "manager" to cancel our 2nd night reservation.
Fast forward to our wedding night - we left the reception and drove to the Inn. When we arrived (still dressed in our formal wear) we checked in - I noticed the name on the reservation slip was different, and pointed it out to the receptionist. She merely told me to fill in the "correct name." We checked into the room - it was lovely at first glance. There were rose petals scattered all about the room - it looked very nice. We were hungry, so we went downstairs to the restaurant for dinner. The waiter agreed to add the check to our room bill.
Halfway through our dinner, the restaurant manager notified us that there was a "problem" and that the hotel receptionist would explain it to us. It seems that they did not have a reservation for us. When I mentioned that the "wrong name" was on the reservation, she said she thought because we had just gotten married that my last name was not right (like it would have changed magically during the ceremony). No, the reservation was in a foreign name. When we said we'd like to finish dinner before we retrieved our belongings, she assured us all was okay because she and her manager had already moved our personal belongings out of the room and behind the front desk! Our suitcases, wedding gifts, my purse, etc! I was livid!
Walking up the hallway, we were confronted by a man who exclaimed.."Oh, you just got married? {duh, we're in our wedding dress and tux still!} That's awesome...I'm getting married tomorrow!" and then proceeded to walk into our room that we had already checked into!! There was not even an apology from the front desk. She said she checked around and the nearest hotel room was in HB. When we asked if they would be paying for our room, she scoffed and said, "Why would we do that?" "Because we were charged for one night at your hotel!" I exclaimed. They said there was no record of our reservation (although my credit card bill stated differently!) and when we implored her to call the manager who made (and cancelled the one night of) our reservation, she simply said, there was no way she could call her...it was too late.
Long story short, we were sucked in initially by the romantic notion of enjoying our wedding night in this intimate bed and breakfast and then returning each anniversary to explore a new room and theme, and instead we spent our wedding night, at home, in our own comfortable bed! No checkout times, no crappy breakfast, and no rowdy pubcrawlers keeping us up all night. And, we never received an apology from the management, even though we requested a return phone call explaining why our wedding night was ruined!
NOT staying here was probably the best thing that happened to us - and the worst thing that happened to them. We posted a complaint in the local paper and vowed that every year we'd repost the awful events of our wedding night. Anniversary #1 is at hand, and the Doryman's Inn is SOL because they've lost years worth of business and referrals from us.

(No, this is NOT a bogus review - I have credit card receipts to substanciate our claims...)
