My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of our California vacation.
This is the BEST hotel we have ever stayed in. Not the most plush, lavish, or exotic hotel w/ the best/most amenities, but for all-around service, location and atmosphere, Bay Shores Peninsula Inn is TOPS!
Location - right on Balboa Ave and just a 1 minute walk to the beach. Restaurants and shopping only a 5-minute walk.
Service - Clay at the front desk went out of his way to make our stay so nice - directions, where to eat, helping us w/ our luggage onto the elevator, then running up the stairs to open door and help us out of the elevator, and making sure we had everything we needed. The other staff members were just as friendly & helpful. If there is not enough room to park in their lot (only about 10 spaces) they give you pass to park in the city lot across the street AND THEY FEED THE METER for you! How cool is that?! Also, the free beach towels, chairs, boogie boards and umbrellas were a nice touch.
Breakfast bar each morning was very good and had a nice variety of choices.
Our room was on the 2nd floor and overlooked both the parking lot and Balboa Ave. Very clean, well decorated and a good amount of space. Water pressure in the shower was grand!. We really liked the way the room was decorated. So much so my wife wants to redecorate our bedroom the same way. Thanks a lot guys...:P The king size bed was very comfortable and we didn't here any of our neighbors either above, below or on the side of our room.
Views from the sun deck were great both at sunrise and sunset (see pictures).
This hotel is also very close to the John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana - only about a 7-10 minute drive.
We have stayed in hotels/motels all over the US, Canada and UK and this is the BEST hotel so far in which we have stayed. Only wish it could have been for more than 2 nights.

Whilst on a short road trip my husband and I took the wrong turn off Highway 1 and arrived at Balboa Island by mistake. What a great mistake! We saw the Bay Shores hotel and stopped for the night but after a walk along the beach we decided to stop for two nights instead. The Hotel was right by the beach and the free beach chairs, brolleys and boogie boards were great.
The room itself was immaculate and the bed very comfortable.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the complimentary breakfast was plentiful and tasty, and the view from the roof terrace was great.
We will definatily return.

“Fantastic Hotel!”

We have never been to California before, chose newport beach as a base as it was close to Disney for the kids and close enough for a day trip to San Diego. Booked the hotel because of the reviews on trip adviser. The hotel was excellent, the staff very friendly and helpful and the fresh cookies everyday were a real winner with the kids. We had a suite ( room 100 ) which was huge and gave us 2 seperate bedrooms. The breakfast was informal and the free use of beach equipment saved me a fortune. The location couldnt have been better, a 1 minute walk to the ocean or the marina, great restraunts and shops within a few minutes walk and a shor ferry ride takes you to balboa island which is beautiful. This is a wealthy, laid back area, great for kids and the hotel was first class - thanks to Scott who welcomed us and to Ralph and the team who made our stay very enjoyable!

“great hotel, fourth stay there, just a bummer I got bit in bed this time”

I stayed with my wife in room 301 on 3/6 and 3/7, perhaps right down the hall from the gal who just wrote a long glowing review. yesterday

So this was our fourth visit to this hotel which speaks for itself.

The hotel is homey, and is located a three minute walk from the Newport Pier with all of the bars, restaurants and shopping you might want. They have great amenities too. we hadn't discovered the roof deck until this trip, but it's terrific.

And the staff really is helpful and friendly.
The showers are fantastic and the rooms are "clean".

So this trip I was discouraged when after my first night I noticed three or four bug bites. Little red itchy spots that definately were not there when I wentto bed. They oozed/secreted after initial scratching - just like a chigger bite.
My wife had no similar afflictions.

After the second night, I had several more and now a week later they still itch. If you've ever had chigger bites, it's similar but not quite as bad and hopefully won't last as long.

So I told the manager upon checking out that I wasn't sure that they didn't have a bed bug problem and showed him some of the spots on my arm. He asked if they could be from spiders but I don't think so, and am relatively certain I got them while in bed.
Again, my wife had no issues. The manager said he'd have housekeeping check into it.

I have mixed feelings about writing this review.
Ought I just keep my story to myself?
I think not, it happened.
Evidently "bed bugs" are visible to the naked eye. I think I'll look carefully between the sheets before I stay there again.

Management Response
RobFibs, Manager
(Management representative)

“Cleanliness has never been an issue with our property in 30 years, the 50+ reviews we have received on this site or our unannounced AAA inspections. We have frequent routine pest control to avoid any such issues. With hundreds of other guests in the hotel during that time frame with no such issues, it's unlikely any insects found their way directly and solely to his side of the bed up on the 3rd floor.

The day we received notice of this guest’s concern, we called our pest control who came out and certified there was nothing in the bed or any bed at the property.

When the guest was here it was unseasonably warm and he may have gotten bitten walking in the sand on the beach. The fact his wife was not bitten in the same bed seems to support the idea that the bites came from somewhere else.

I invite any potential guest to call me if they have further questions at 800-222-6675. Thank you, Ralph Prieto, Manager”
