We stayed at the Balboa Bay Club so my husband could meet some clients in the area after a trip to Disneyland. I chose the Balboa Bay Club after reading other reviews and was glad to be forewarned about the stuffy sounding dress code for public spaces at the hotel. We were there during the week and noticed that the clientele was on the 65+ side and we made sure to keep our kids in line. We checked out on a Friday and noticed that more families and younger couples seemed to be checking in. We took advantage of a package including a $40 breakfast credit and free valet parking.
The hotel is lovely and the main reason I'm writing a review at all is that the beds here are some of the most comfortable I've ever slept in at a hotel. Nice linens and a big, fluffy featherbed on top of the mattress. We stayed the next night at the Georgian in Santa Monica and while the Georgian is a great hotel, the bed there paled in comparison the plush bed at the Balboa Bay Club. The rooms are big and the bathroom is huge. We had two queen beds in our room and it still felt comfortable and not cramped at all.
I agree with other reviewers that the location is somewhat remote. There aren't a lot of options nearby for dining. You have to go back out to street that turns in the 55 freeway to find any other stores or restaurants.
We had room service for dinner and breakfast. The food was delicious and came quickly. Our servers were professional and helpful. One server helped me fish the TV remote out from under one of the beds that was too far away for me to reach.
The club has a little strip of private beach perfect for digging and wading if you have little kids. There's an adjacent pool and hot tub we enjoyed as well. We had a nice time and would like to come back the next time we're in Orange County.
