I've had the good fortune to have stayed at this particular B&B on many occasions. If you love the coast, Pacific Grove is absolutely gorgeous, very romantic and one of my favorite places to visit! The Green Gables Inn is a clean and well maintained storybook Queen Anne style home circa 1888, ideally located just across the street from the beach (Monterey Bay). If you are fortunate enough to reserve one of their ocean front rooms (Balcony, Chapel or Gable rooms), you will be able to watch & hear the waves crashing from your bedroom window(s)! Please, be advised...these rooms are very popular and book-up well in advance!!
If you are interested in staying at this inn, here are some other things to consider:
While I love this B&B for its local and beautiful Victorian details, unfortunately, I know there are many other places where you can find a much better breakfast. I've been to this establishment several times recently, and while the evening hors d'oeuvres were tasty, their breakfasts were mediocre at best. They are certainly not gourmet! They are something most of us could quickly whip-up any morning. (One day our breakfast selection consisted of fresh cut fruit with either quiche, hard, cold doughy biscuits, oatmeal, cold cereal and orange juice, coffee or tea. This left us still feeling hungry and with something to be desired. It's no wonder others take huge portions. It's either that or you have to keep going back for more just to be satisfied. Another morning it was luke-warm scrambled eggs and potatoes with fruit and choice of cereal). Also, their evening cookies and cakes are not always fresh. On weekends, when the inn is fully booked, I would recommend either going somewhere else for breakfast or paying a little extra to have your breakfast delivered to your bedroom door. Otherwise, expect to get up early to beat the crowds downstairs. If you wait until after 9 am., to eat breakfast, please be advised that you may get stuck in a crowd, waiting for a table to open-up and for more food to be prepared/served. This did happen to us. Unfortunately, with a buffet style breakfast, the innkeepers have no way to control the portions of food each guest is taking. To be honest, some guests do take more than their fair share (I've personally seen this happen), and I can't exactly blame the guest since the portions are so small and inadequate. This of course, leaves the other guests waiting, while the kitchen staff is suddenly sent hustling to prepare more food. It's a bit embarrassing for such a fine establishment in every other sense!
Another fascinating fact that some of you may be interested in knowing is that reservations for the very popular "Balcony Room" are not open to the general public, on a first come basis. Over the years this particular room has become so popular that the owners/managers new policy is to offer it first, only to those who are currently staying in it. Those who have it currently reserved, have up to a week, to decide whether they want the room reserved again, for the following year, before it is opened to the general public. Basically, it works almost like a time share. So, if you have a special date you have been waiting and hoping to book that Balcony Room for, good-luck! Generally, during high-season, holidays, Fridays and Saturdays the Balcony Room is booked a full year in advance, unless there is a cancellation and there is no way to reserve the room unless you either currently have it reserved or those that did, opt out of it for the following year. Good-luck!!
