We saw the reviews of Andril online, and called to book a 2 br/1 ba. Our rate of $205 a night included a kitchen. We have one child but could have brought 3 for the space in the 2nd bedroom. That was nice. The kitchen was a very good size, and the table could seat 6. There was also a large patio area with a bar-b-q grill. We had #28, which was on the road, but noise is not an issue at all -- and I was very picky about that. The decor was minimal, and the carpet looked worn, the bedding as well, and there were a few ants looking for water and food, which was resolved very quickly by the management. (though the pesky buggers did return...). The staff were all very helpful whenever we had a request. Other amenities included: A lovely grassy, open play area with paddle rackets, baseball bat & ball, balls for tossing, jai alai, tetherball, a glider swing, and hammock. An outdoor grilling area for a larger party. A ping pong table. An enclosed private spa area with lovely towering redwoods around.
There are a lot of wildlife viewing opportunities around (especially if you don't have a preschooler with you...). We had a deer outside our door one afternoon, and the Asilomar Conference Ground is directly across the street (fenced in), so the deer have safe feeding areas in early evening (4:30). One has to be very safe driving in this neighborhood as the deer think nothing of travelling across busy streets to get to wooded areas.
The beach is just through Asilomar Conference Grounds. A lovely walk through the grounds and then along the boardwalk in the dunes. Across Ocean View Drive is the Asilomar Beach. There is no such thing as "ocean front" lodging in Pacific Grove, which is o.k. Since no one has it, the beaches are right there for everyone to see and enjoy. There is a long walking trail along the rocky shore. Tidepools are also teeming with life. We spent hours there. Bike riding is along the roadway but very easy, even with our 4 year old. We had our child on a trailer bike and rode around PG all week and it was fine. Hilly, but fine. A nice workout.
About the only thing I would do differently is buy more food beforehand. And bring all my breakfast food to have at the motel. We went out for our meals mostly. The breakfasts in PG were expensive and not too swell.
I gave the Andril 3 stars. I probably should have given it four, but I did find a few things that were probably small, but things like the shower curtain missing a liner, the ants, the carpeting the bed covers, and the 'lived in' look of the room made me feel less than 100% sure I'd stay here again. We did spend over $200 a night. I imagine in summer this room goes for over $300 a night. For that kind of money, I'd be a lot more disappointed in the room. The location is fantastic, but there are a lot of lodging options nearby. If I found a better rate at a nearby hotel, I would probably try it, if it was the same configuration (2 + 1). But I reallly did appreciate the service at the Andril. Very nice staff.
