My wife and I have just returned from our honeymoon in California. While we spent most of our time in San Francisco and Napa Valley, we were able to spend one night at the Sunset Inn as we were returning from a visit to Hearst Castle. We did not have reservations but were able to secure a room with a spa, fireplace, and very comfortable amenities. The staff was accommodating, the continental breakfast very tasty, and the location and quiet were great. I think the workmen who were refurbishing other cottages waited until we were up and about before beginning the noisy activities. Close to everything--17 mile Drive, fisherman's wharf, aquarium, etc The hotel manager recommended the Fishwife restaurant about a mile away--dinner was positively great. My wife and I are still talking about the night we spent at the Sunset Inn--and we spent 5 nights in San Francisco in a smaller room that was more expensive. You will never regret staying here.

Visited Monterey for a short weekend trip and decided to give this hotel a try. We were NOT disappointed! They've recently remodeled and we got the opportunity to stay in a new room. Simply amazing! Such a refreshing change from other hotels that we've stayed in. We also appreciated the quiet peacefulness of the property. The staff was helpful and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. On our next trip to Monterey, we'll definitely stay at this hotel again.

There were plenty of available hotels in the area, but we chose the Sunset Inn as the room description had a spa-tub listed. Just as we were about to leave on our trip, we recieved a phone call that this room was not available and we had booked it just as the listing was going to be changed and we were credited $10!!! and given a down-graded room.
When we arrived at the hotel, we were informed by the unpleasant staff at the reception desk that if we didn't like it we could go elsewhere (it was late afternoon). No apolgies offered no attempt to right the situation. The room we were given was basic. No coffee/tea maker in the room, lights out in the bathroom and what is described as a "rain -shower" is pitiful. A generic shower head in a stall that is indeed "big enough for 2" but you will freeze your butt off.
A continental breakfast was offered but the coffee served was so foul it could strip paint.
On the plus side, it was clean.

Management Response

We would like to apologize for any unsatisfactory visit to Sunset Inn. The reservation was booked through Expedia and therefore they were the ones that contacted the guest at an inconvenient time. We take pride in our new rooms and this particular guest never complained about a light bulb being out to the manager. Coffee makers are available upon request but no request was ever made. Furthermore this guest was upgraded from an older room with a spa tub to a newly remodeled room w/o tub and received a $10 credit. The guest was also told by the manager a further $10 credit could be given but the guest seemed dissatisfied from the beginning. We tried everything to make the trip a pleasurable one for the guest.

We booked this hotel for a romantic getaway for my partner's birthday. The website made it look fresh and stylish -- but it's NOT, at least in the rooms that haven't been remodeled yet!

When we first walked into the room, we were just about grossed out -- lots of mold in the tub grout, unfinished and dirty wood trim in bathroom and doorways, dirty windows (one with the window screen hanging in the tree outside!), no smoke alarm (although the empty base was there), a microwave and minifridge sitting all cockeyed like they were tossed there, a dirty ashtray on the table outside and a bed that had a swayback like the oldest horse in the barn!

We were too tired to fight about it that night, but the next morning we complained, and they moved us to a very nice (newly remodeled room). It was very comfy -- new wood floors, nice new bed, flat screen TV, new and stylish furnishings. And a hot tub with no mold!

Still, the windows were painted shut and the remodelers woke us up at 8am Sunday morning banging and shouting.

And the "hearty repast" they mention on the website barely passes for a breakfast snack. Regular 99-cent Safeway bread, muffins, juice and coffee. Unless we missed them, there weren't even bagels.

If you stay here, for $139 or $119, make sure to ask about the remodeling progress and get a new room. There is no common areas to speak of and the courtyard is under construction as well.

The staff was friendly and helped when we complained, but they should mention their remodeling up-front. They didn't give us any discounts, just changed rooms. I doubt I'll go back. There are a lot of choices in this area.

Wow, what a find! We discovered this gorgeous little inn on expedia. We were hesitant based on other reviews on here but couldn't beat the price. According to the innkeeper, the hotel was in shambles before and new ownership came in and rennovated the whole place. Nice flat screen televisions, comfy beds, beautiful bathrooms. could hear the ocean at night. It was quite romantic and peaceful. We played at Pacific Grove Golf course which was waaaaaaaay cheaper than Pebble Beach and is on the ocean as well. The golf course is right next to the Sunset Inn. We will definitely be back!
