“Lovely Hotel - Will Definitely Be Back”

Cottage Inn by the Sea

14 Apr 2008

I stayed at the Cottage Inn while in the area on business and the hotel was great - I am planning a trip back to the area with my husband and will stay at this hotel again.

I had an ocean view room, which was on the second floor with a balcony looking toward the pool and out over the ocean. For better views, there are rooms which sit on a bluff overlooking the ocean with a nice garden area in front.

The weather was absolutely lousy during my stay, but the room was quite cozy - the gas fireplace was a definite plus. The linens were good quality and the bed very comfortable. Some of the decor could stand to be updated - floral and chintz curtains. The internet access was good - no problems connecting or anything like that.

The only reason I gave this hotel an "Above Average" rating instead of "Excellent" was the breakfast. It was the off season and there weren't too many guests, which could explain the lack of variety, but the pastries did not seem fresh and the coffee was passable at best. 2 out of 3 mornings I skipped the hotel breakfast and went down the street to the Steaming Bean for some really good coffee and pastry.

“Lovely Place with some issues”

My wife and I stayed at the Cottage Inn for our 34th wedding anniversary. We were pleased at the size and quality of the room, with large windows that face the ocean, and a semi-private patio off the room with great views of the ocean. Unfortunately our room was adjacent to the ice machine which serenaded us with the loud compressor noise all night. Fortunately the sound of the ocean waves helped us tune out the cacophony of the ice machine.
The continental breakfast was really fabulous. Everything from cold cereal to self-cooked waffles is available. Fresh squeezed orange juice, apple juice, great hot coffee, bagels, toast of all kinds, croissants, and much more is available. And the hours of service are long enough to allow one to sleep in and still have some of everything.
I was a little disappointed with two things: the mattress was really soft, almost spongy, and it really made my back hurt. When I reported this to the staff they were understanding, and aware of the complaints. They reported that new mattresses are coming soon.
The other issue was the cleanliness of the glassware in the room. After seeing the news reports of mishandling of hotel/motel glassware I marked the glasses my wife and I used. After the staff had cleaned the room, the same glasses were back on the table complete with the little paper cap. They obviously were not sanitized in any acceptable way or the mark would have been removed. I used the wrapped plastic cups after that. I trust this will be rectified soon.
My wife reported a couple of other issues. There was mold around the bathroom window and under the soap dish. There was chewing gum stuck on the headboard which we had to remove. The headboard and other areas of the room could use a little more attention to clean the dust. The carpet could use a better cleaning, especially under the bed. An item of ours rolled under the bed and when we reached under to retrieve it we noticed how dirty it was
On the whole our stay was fine. We will stay there again the next time we need a nice hotel.

Thank you so much for your comments in regards to your recent stay. I just wanted to clarify what our procedures are for cleaning our guestroom glassware. We have a commercial dishwasher that is used to sanitize all of our glasses with a 3 part system from a respectable distributer and all glasses are removed from the room and brought to the kitchen to be cleaned since, the video's have surfaced we had a company wide meeting with the houskeeping staff where we showed the video and discussed the importance of sanitizing all items in the room. I have shared your comments with my staff and I can assure you had you brought this to our attention we would have gladly replaced the glasses for you immediately.

We just returned from a trip up the California Coast to look at colleges with our daughter. Our second stop was in Pismo Beach. This was a fantastic hotel located on the cliffs north of the pier. It has an outstanding view overlooking the ocean. The room was very clean with two big King beds. The staff were very friendly and kind. Helped us with maps and directions to the local college. The hotel was quiet, we opened a window at night for some beautiful ocean air and did not hear other hotel guests, etc. Breakfast was great too, we enjoyed making our own hot waffles.

The kids enjoyed the pool. We sat at the chairs the hotel provided to watch the beautiful sunset. It was great. Next time we will bring some wine and cheese. Would stay here again!!

“Absolutely awful experience!”

We were extremely disappointed with the Cottage Inn.. Firstly the hotel and especially food looked nothing like the pictures! We were given a room under some stairs, it was dark and it smelt of dampness. Then when it came to breakfast the food was absolutely awful, there was no fruit at all, the hot food (ie, the tiny sausages and eggs were cold and not replenished, so it seemed we were offered the left-overs (that's the appearance it had, and we arrived for breakfast well within the time frame). The food was simply disgusting so don't think you're getting a good deal to have breakfast included in the very expensive $250 plus room rate. We had booked 2 nights, and were so apauled that we stayed somewhere else the following night. Also the staff were rude, they didn't show a care for my complaints at all. The only ok part was the pool (it looked like the pictures) although it was small and filled with people so it wasn't fun either.

Thank you for your comments in regards to the stay you had with us in August of 2006. I have recently taken over this hotel as the General Manger the beginning of this year (2008) and I have reviewed your comments with my new staff as well and I can assure you that you would certainly not have the same experience as before. Our breakfast is scrumptious and provides a great variety of pastry's, breads, cereals, fruit, juices, milk, cook to order waffles, eggs, etc...

We have also gone through some renovations since your last stay and will be doing some additional projects in April of this year in hopes to enhance our guest's stay.

I would encourage you to stay with us again the next time you are looking for a weekend getaway. Please contact me directly at the hotel 805-773-4617 and ask to speak with the General Manager.

Thank you again for your comments.

We stayed for two nights and three days, Ocean Front room with a small semi-private seating area outside. Room was beautiful! Morning breakfasts were also more than adequate. We chose this location because we were travelling with our dog. In the past we have stayed at the Best Western Shore Cliff Lodge, which is also nice, but doesn't allow dogs. Our dog loved the trip as well!

We could hear the sound of the surf crashing on the cliffs below at night. It was also handy to both Shell Beach and Pismo Beach.

My only negative is that the bed was a little too soft, almost saggy. But we will stay here again whenever we travel with our dog.
