Hello fellow travelers!

Just returned from a long weekend at Sycamore. Overall, had a wonderful time - it was very relaxing and peaceful. Close to the beach and the mountains, you couldn't beat the location. It does have a bit of an older feel to it, so some updates would be nice, but it was certainly a nice place, regardless.

We stayed in the East Meadow suites (in Mellow). These, I believe, are the newer rooms, so maybe we were a bit spoiled. The room was lovely, with a separate bedroom wtih large 4-poster king bed, plus a nice sitting room area with a sofabed/couch, mini-fridge, and gas fireplace. The bedroom also had a really nice plasma TV. The bathroom was quite large, wtih a GREAT shower, huge, with seat, and dual shower heads. :)

We had a nice-sized balcony wtih a small table/chairs and hottub. It was fairly private, too, which was nice. The hottub on our balcony was fresh water, but it was still very nice (the resort is known for its mineral springs, so be sure if that's what you want, that you clarify what type of hottub your room has). Unfortunately, we were not able to rent one of the sulfur mineral springs tubs that are available for rent on the hillsides. While I'm a bit disappointed to have missed out on this feature of the hotel, I was still very happy with what we had.

We ate one night at the onsite restaurant - The Gardens of Avila. It was wonderful. It's rather small and romantic and the service and food were top-notch. Make a reservation early - you'll be happy you did.

Service was a bit spotty - the 24-hour bellman service can drive you around the property in golf carts - these guys were always nice and friendly and arrived in a timely manner, when requested. However, other services (the spa, guest services, etc.) seemed less helpful at times. Example - we checked out on a Monday and they couldn't extend more than a half an hour for late check-out. Example - when we tried to call to reserve a tub, they were all booked. We asked if they could notify us of a cancellation and they said they could not. I asked if I could just call back and they said OK. When I called back, they said I was past the cut-off time for reservations, so they could not help me (it would have been nice to have been informed of this cut-off on the initial conversation).

Overall, if you're looking for a relaxing or romantic weekend away, you'll enjoy your time here. I'd say this place is ideal for couples, but I did see families there, as well. Some aspects were top-notch, others could use improving, but, overall, we had a very nice time.

Hope this review helped! :)

We stayed in the "Harmony" building. The room was very nice, almost luxurious, with two queen sized beds, a big TV and a deck with a Jacuzzi. The tiny bathroom, however, was straight out of a Motel 6, including a one-piece plastic bathtup/shower. We were on the ground floor, so when the people above us came in it sounded like a herd of elephants. This was at midnight, so take my advice and ask for a room on the second floor -- better to be the herd of elephants than to hear them. BTW you should know that this mineral springs is a sulphur springs, so there is a strong odor of sulphur everywhere. If you haven't experienced that odor just imagine an entire football team, four hours after a giant Mexican dinner. In summation, the place has a long way to go to be a luxury resort but if you can enjoy it for what it is, then go there.

“Sycamore, great getaway”

Sycamore Mineral Springs

9 Mar 2008

We received a gift certificate to Sycamore. The first time we went was 2 years ago, and didn't care for the heavy sulfur smell of the hot tubs....but this time was absolutely fantastic. We stayed in "Joyful," the area across the footbridge. The room was absolutely beautiful and clean, esp. the bathroom. We loved the built-in chess board (with glass pieces), were delighted with the gas fireplace, the 4-poster bed (huge), and the huge flat panel in the bedroom. The only complaint we had was the frumpy uncomfortable hide-a-bed couch in the living room. How could this be overlooked?

The hot tub had fresh water (no smell), with a gorgeous view of the stars. We had the feeling of utmost privacy. Down the path was an added bonus...the Dan Jones trail. We thoroughly enjoyed bird and reptile watching...what an immaculate area, no litter, no loud voices...just really nice folks on bikes and on foot.

We took advantage of the spa (facial and massage), and found it to be pretty nice, although pricey. An added bonus is a trip to the hot tub before treatment, be sure you arrive there in time to take advantage, we only had 10 minutes.

We found this to be a very restful, relaxing and sensual getaway. It may take a while to get a golf cart to pick you up, so you may choose to walk your suitcases back for checkout.

“Unforgettable”

I had an unforgettable time at this hotel back in 2005. It was my first trip with my wife-to-be, and this honeymoon preview took us up and down Highway 1 in California. Somewhere along the way, we stopped at this lovely San Luis Obispo hotel. We had a great, great time. The mineral water bath with an added bottle of californian Zinfandel was out of this world. I wish I had stayed longer, since we arrived at night, and as we woke up we realized there was a lovely swimming pool, and we hardly had time to try it. This is one place I'd love to come back to.

I've been coming here for the last 5 years or so. Still a beautiful part of California's central coast. But, the resort is getting too pricey ( $80 for room service: Ceaser salad and a bowl of seafood stew - !!!??!! ), relative to what they offer. The rooms need renovation - for sure. The place is still "acceptable" and the staff is great, but it's not the jewel that it used to be...
