“If only the HEATER were not old, this would be a fantastic hotel”

This would be hands-down an awesome hotel if the bloody heater/air conditioner weren't so old.

Everything else is perfect. Huge rooms, modern showers, great location, great staff...but the heater kept me from sleeping well for 3 nights.

Every night I woke up at 3 am, then 6 am to doodle with this stupid old, loud heater. It was so maddingly frustrating.

The problem was the outside temp was 42 degrees so I had the heater set to 72. It would get so hot in the room that I turned it off and went to sleep.

Then the room got freezing cold and I put the heater back on. Then the room got too cold and on and on it went.

I changed rooms and the same thing happened which leads me to believe it might be a problem in all the rooms.

It's such a shame. Much like universities that remodel everything except the lousy student chairs and the lousy temperature settings, hotels today do the same identical thing!

I don't want fancy towels and fancy bedspreads. I want great climate controls and a great desk. That's it. Maybe new carpeting, too.

Everything else about the San Mateo Marriott was impeccably good elsewhere. If you stayed here in the summer, it might be much better.

Anyway, it isn't worth more than $60 a night. I say this because I truly would have enjoyed a new Best Western over this. Save your money and help a missionary or donate it to finding a cure for cancer.

“Hotwire put into the Marriott”

I decided to take a chance on booking with Hotwire for a night in San Mateo. They came through with everything they promised, and I was excited when I learned the 4 star hotel was a Marriott. This is a great hotel if your top priority is a large, well appointed room and use of a state of the art exercise room and a pool. Where it falls short is the added expenses: $14 per night to park, $9.95 per day for internet connection, and over $10 for a continental breakfast. The more moderately priced hotels where we usually stay when traveling provide these items at no charge.

“Very nice hotel with updated ammenities but...”

Overall: I've stayed at this hotel twice and I've been very pleased with my experience. Only caveats are there is not enough shuttle service, and the onsite restaurant is decent, just not that great.

Pros:
-Rooms are updated with new Marriott styles. (reading led lights, flat screen tvs with plug ins, ipod connections for alarm clock)
-Bathroom was very clean and new fixtures with red wood stained trim. (even had a little plant on the counter. a very nice touch)
-Staff are very friendly and have been able to provide good service when requested of (I asked for a video cable to plug into the tv, so i can watch tv and do work at the same time, was able to provide support in under 15 mins)
-Very accessible from the freeway
-On site Hertz location for easy rental turn ins or pick ups

Cons:
-Restaurant tries to be more than it is. It's a average restaurant that tries to dress up their food with fancy names and overreaching dishes (i.e. lobster mac and cheese. sounds like it'd be great, but it ended up not being so much. I'd rather just have good normal mac and cheese)
-The airport shuttle leaves only once and hour. That was a real big turn off. If i have an early flight, I have to make sure I get the only shuttle that leaves that hour. I've highly considered going to the SF Airport Marriott simply for this reason alone.

All in all, if you're looking for a nice hotel that very accessible to the freeway with great amenities, but don't need to take the airport shuttle, I'd highly recommend it. If you need the shuttle, then think about going to SF Airport Marriott.

“Nice room, nice hotel, Parking expensive, food ridiculous”

I got this room for $87 on priceline for a Saturday stay. It is a high 3 to low 4-star hotel.

The good: Nice, clean room, very comfortable bed. There is a widescreen hd tv in every room, and that is great!

The bad: parking is $14 per day, and the restaurant was horrible.

There were 6 of us there, and we had bad experiences all around. For breakfast, we got the full buffets which tasted great! Unfortunately, our server was very absent-minded and we had to ask multiple times for drinks and waited for a long time for it. We eventually got the check after a long while. Apparently, one pays for the check up front with the host, or at least we did since she never came back to us. The problem with the service is that when your table has only drinks (oj and coffee), there should be almost no wait. Thats all we asked for. And did I mention this was all at $20 per person?!

Its too bad, because this review would have been a lot higher without the restaurant. Just make sure when you go there, skip the restaurant. And if you can avoid, don't park there.
