We rambled in to the Eagle Inn late on a Thursday night without reseravtions. The front desk clerk was professional and courteous. We were booked into one of the cottage rooms, which was a total shocker! The "room" was actually a suite, with an oversized bath, and a double head shower. The decor was well thought out and attractive.
The Eagle Inn has one drawback; the construction noise in the morning. We were not drastically affected by this as we were travelling straight through, but if we had booked the room for a "quiet" getaway, the noise might have been an annoyance.
All in all, I'd say a good value for Santa Barbara, close to the beach, close to State Street, attractive rooms, and efficient service. Santa Barbara is riddled with "high end historical" hotels that are nothing more than old, musty, and cold.
