My family has been going to "The Basque" since it opened and I don't even want to think about how many years ago that was, but the kids were in grammar school and now they are old enough to have made The Basque their favorite place to come back home to. And the place just keeps getting better. From the amazing sour dough bread baked fresh each night, to the "in season" lunch specials, the food is terrific. If the beet soup happens to be on the menu when you go, don't miss it! I swear, I could eat it every day. I don't think I could celebrate my birthday without at least one piece of their Chocolate Truffle Gateau. The brewed coffee used to be my only complaint, but now they are using beans from a local coffee roaster, so I can't even complain about that. There is often a line when you place your order, but we have never not gotten a table or a seat at the bar. Somehow, a spot opens up "just in time," its part of the magic and charm of the place. Françoise, the owner and Philip, the manager are two of my favorite long time Sonoma people, and the rest of the staff are always friendly, helpful and gracious. They say it feels like being in France, but I find it MUCH friendlier than anything I experienced in Paris. The Basque is an order at the counter, pick your food up, bus your own table kind of place.
