I have been staying at Chateau Marmont for a number of years - usually two or three times a year. I have stayed in a wide variety of rooms raning from the bungalows to suites in the main building. Generally it is a favourite place for me to stay due to the location and the ambience of the hotel - it exudes a certain charm although this last trip has made me have second thoughts on staying there again.
I visited this trip with my wife and young son who is 18 months. We had booked a poolside bungalow but on arrival were told that filming was taking place at the poolside during our stay and therefore a suggestion of a suite in the hotel was offered. We duly accepted this suite overlooking the pool area.
It was on the 5th floor and I requested that the balcony be madesecure so our son could not potentially explore too far. This was done by them sending a maintenance person to our room who secured the lock with cable ties. In fact I could still open the door so the ties were not effective, regardless our 18 month old could not have reached the handle.
The faucet fixings in the bathroom were leaking badly, the wall at the shower had plaster falling out. I requested these items to be repaired, it took to the end of the day and another call from me about it before they sent someone to "fix" it. This consisted of fixing the leaky water problem but filling the wall with new plaster, which was alright if somewhat ugly - if only they had removed the old plaster from the bath - again a hazard for our son and not particularly good housekeeping on their part.
Housekeeping in general in terms of room tidiness was ample but not what I would expect. For example our bathroom shelf never got cleaned all fortnight - it was pretty grubby after 2 or 3 days - not good enough.
Then on the second week a party was being held in the pool area in the evening - until around 12. We arrived back at the hotel and were told the garage was full - it was only after I told them we were staying there it was apparent there were spaces - surely they could have asked if were hotel guets. Additionally the noise was pretty loud, I accept that this is a celeb hotspot so parties etc are the norm, however we could not get our son to sleep. All I would hope for is that on making the resevation the hotel tell us that a) filming is happening and b) a party is also happening during our stay and give us the choice to either find somewhere else to stay or accept the inconvenience - nothing was said beforehand.
I have never found the food at the Chateau exceptional or the staff that service oriented - it is passable at best. Although there is always the exception and there are one or two very good waiters, most seem to have an overly laid back approach to service - guess it must too much celebrity presence and lesser mortals are less noticed.
Yes - the rooms are somewhat shabby chic however some are better than others and your mileage may vary.
If you are looking for a central Hollywood location that gives you the opportunity to be near it all and have privacy - this is it!
However the standards need to be raised somwhat, it is living largely on it's reputation as a celebrity hangout - all in all the verdict from myself - a frequent visitor is "must try harder".
