Chateau Marmont

I have been staying at Chateau Marmont for a number of years - usually two or three times a year. I have stayed in a wide variety of rooms raning from the bungalows to suites in the main building. Generally it is a favourite place for me to stay due to the location and the ambience of the hotel - it exudes a certain charm although this last trip has made me have second thoughts on staying there again.

I visited this trip with my wife and young son who is 18 months. We had booked a poolside bungalow but on arrival were told that filming was taking place at the poolside during our stay and therefore a suggestion of a suite in the hotel was offered. We duly accepted this suite overlooking the pool area.

It was on the 5th floor and I requested that the balcony be madesecure so our son could not potentially explore too far. This was done by them sending a maintenance person to our room who secured the lock with cable ties. In fact I could still open the door so the ties were not effective, regardless our 18 month old could not have reached the handle.

The faucet fixings in the bathroom were leaking badly, the wall at the shower had plaster falling out. I requested these items to be repaired, it took to the end of the day and another call from me about it before they sent someone to "fix" it. This consisted of fixing the leaky water problem but filling the wall with new plaster, which was alright if somewhat ugly - if only they had removed the old plaster from the bath - again a hazard for our son and not particularly good housekeeping on their part.

Housekeeping in general in terms of room tidiness was ample but not what I would expect. For example our bathroom shelf never got cleaned all fortnight - it was pretty grubby after 2 or 3 days - not good enough.

Then on the second week a party was being held in the pool area in the evening - until around 12. We arrived back at the hotel and were told the garage was full - it was only after I told them we were staying there it was apparent there were spaces - surely they could have asked if were hotel guets. Additionally the noise was pretty loud, I accept that this is a celeb hotspot so parties etc are the norm, however we could not get our son to sleep. All I would hope for is that on making the resevation the hotel tell us that a) filming is happening and b) a party is also happening during our stay and give us the choice to either find somewhere else to stay or accept the inconvenience - nothing was said beforehand.

I have never found the food at the Chateau exceptional or the staff that service oriented - it is passable at best. Although there is always the exception and there are one or two very good waiters, most seem to have an overly laid back approach to service - guess it must too much celebrity presence and lesser mortals are less noticed.

Yes - the rooms are somewhat shabby chic however some are better than others and your mileage may vary.

If you are looking for a central Hollywood location that gives you the opportunity to be near it all and have privacy - this is it!

However the standards need to be raised somwhat, it is living largely on it's reputation as a celebrity hangout - all in all the verdict from myself - a frequent visitor is "must try harder".

“Great for a young family. Really!!”

I, my husband and our two youngs sons (2.5 and 5 mos.) stayed at the Chateau last May and found it to be absolutely perfect for a family.

We hadn't begun planning looking spcifically at CM, but when I pulled up the website out of curiosity, I thought it seemed it might work. And it did. Beautifully. We booked a one-bedroom suite. The separation between the bedroom and the rest of the suite allowed us to accommodate our 5-month-old in a pak-n-play in the bedroom, while our 2-year-old stayed in a crib (provided by the hotel - with Frette linens) in the living room. No need to go to bed as a family!!

The kitchen, of which some reviewers have complained, was a welcome bonus for us, as we stocked it with snacks for our oldest, and refrigerated milk for the baby there.

We found the staff to be nothing but friendly and welcoming. We didn't meet a single person, guest or employee, in the hotel, who didn't ooh and ahh over our children. That includes the celebrities whom, some seem to think, run the show at CM.

We didn't feel relegated to one "crowd" or another, rather we felt as though everyone there was treated as a treasued guest. When we arrived at the hotel, we pulled in behind a certain celebrity twin dismounting her Range Rover, and in front of Keanu Reeves, who roared in on a Harley. The valets paid an equal amount of attention to all three arrivals. When we arrived at the front desk to find Mr. Reeves chatting with the attendant, she (the attendant) immediately made eye contact with me, and began the process of checking us in. Mr. Reeves excused himself very politely.

As to whether it's overpriced... I suppose it depends on what's important to you. We very much enjoyed the quiet, private nature of the property, especially the pool area, as others have mentioned. This was a special treat for us - we don't regularly spend $400 a night on hotel accommodations. But we relished our time there and would recommend it to friends and family without hesitation.

The accommodations were comfortable and the linens were fabulous. The hotel service was great, if not a little over-bearing. There was a mix up at the restaurant and our entire order (table of 4) was apparently given to and eaten by another party. The staff sent a (nice) bottle of wine to our table to compensate. The room (cottage) was very spacious though somewhat drab. The atmosphere is fun and unique so I am giving it a 5. I do wish the hotel would extend the lounge area so their (non-celebrity) guests could have a few cocktails in a comfortable setting.

“Hollywood Glamour”

Chateau Marmont

10 May 2007

We stayed a week in May and it was wonderful. The hotel is very glamorous in an old hollywood style. We had a 1 bedroom suite and it was very spacious and plenty of light. The kitchen came well equipped with everything from nice champagne to sake. A small dining table in thekitchen was a lovely touch(where we ate breakfast) The living room was huge with a comfy sofas and big chairs if you wanted to entertain guests and a big table to work on if needed. The bedroom was very cosy and the best thing is the BIG COMFY bed. I slept perfect every night. We ate at the restaurant for dinner and it was good. I think when you visit LA you should eat out more and not get stuck in te hotel for dinner. The service was great from the conceirge to the valet guys. The hotel had a lovely pool which is small and very private. All the the stars stays at Chateau and they make you feel very welcolm and special. Guests of the hotel can go to bar Marmont(next door) and have priority to reserved tables and no problems of gettingin the exclusive bar(nice people come here..) It is believed by the locals that this is the BEST hotel in WEST HOLLYWOOD. And eventhough LA is far and you need to drive everywhere Chateau is very central to great restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping. Less than 30 minute from LAX. You get what you pay for...yes its not cheap but you cant afford to stay elsewhere! If you have any questions you can contact me at bantika1@yahoo.com

“mixed feelings about this hotel”

Chateau Marmont

I ve stayed one week at the Chateau Marmont hotel, and booked a one bedroom suite. Altough myboking was confirmed, upon my arrival I was told that the suite i ve booked was not available and that I would be transferred to one of the "cottage" bungalows at the pool side until the suite would become free. Because of that, I was nt able to unpack my suitcase, as I was supposed to move anytime. I strongly recommend to not book any of the cottage/bungalows, as there is a huge difference with the suites in the main building (although the rates are almost equal). they are realy old, unconfortably furnished with furniture which look like they ve been around forever, and have a "motel" feeling. Also, their far away location and separate entrance make them like if you are staying somewhere else and not the Chateau Marmont (with long walks to the reception). A big problem in this hotel is the way the common spaces and lounges are managed. At any time, the restaurant management litreraly extends its area to the lounge, and the staff is ready to chase you away from the lounge area as soon as a small group of people ready to spend money for dining cannot be sated in the restaurant area. You are then simply asked to leave and make the seats in the lounge available for people coming to dinner. This happens from practucaly at any given time of the day or evening. That leaves you with virtualy no space to sit , have a coffe or relax except staung in your room. The hotel managelment should maybe consider of that they are running a hotel and not a restaurant and shoudl rather wave away dinner guests when the restaurant is full, rather then chasing the hotel guests from the hotel lounge and sitting areas. That is really annoying and embarassing.
