Today we rode the Durango/Silverton Railroad and it was just about the best photo opts ever. We left the station right on time and took the 3 1/2 ride up to Silverton. Then left us about 2 1/2 hours to have lunch and walk around town then left exactly on time for the return trip back to Durango.
Silverton, CO is the closest to an old town then you can get to and the lunch was great. We walked around town and took lots of pics and boarded the train.
The train offers a DVD set of the area with i think 3 DVD's in it for $25.00 and if you like that sort of history then it is a real deal. Included is a book that allows you to follow the mile markers that explains what is there and history of the area. You can also buy only the book for $10.00 which we did. I will say it is a bit difficult as first to find where you are but then it gets easier. My husband did not care to have the book but I really enjoyed it.
I really recommend taking the train trip because you will love it, but it is a long day for those traveling with young ones.
Tip: If you know the weather is going to be nice then book the open air/gondola because you have a better viewing area and these seats face out where the coach seats are straight ahead. And the right side is better then the left however if you keep the same seats you will see both sides on the trip.
