Those traveling in the vast, unspoiled landscape that follows beside the Sangre de Cristo mountains will be rewarded to find Willow Spring, a lovely historic B&B that has achieved just the right balance of restoration and easy comfort.
The owners, Jim and Harriet Campbell, are wonderfully welcoming and accommodating – then slipping easily into the background and allowing guests to feel fully at ease and at home. Remarkable in this still very authentically rural, Western setting, the furnishings are a collection of fine Americana intermingled with gallery quality Asian artwork.
Breakfasts were freshly prepared, delicious, ample and lovely; our room was quiet, comfortable and handsomely decorated.
The hamlet of Moffatt is “real” in the sense of being not yet gentrified, and during our three-day stay my wife and I took the time to get to know the place. We found unexpected pleasures: inspired local art, eclectic shops and friendly, engaging shopkeepers, an astonishingly well-stocked organic and health food shop, and very pleasant nearby spa and hot springs.
The Sangre de Cristo mountains are a dramatic presence dominating the horizon, and they offer a variety of adventures, as does the nearby (by Western standards) Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Mostly we relished the quiet, comfort and relaxation afforded by tranquil and refreshing accommodations. Our stay came in the midst of an extended tour of the majestic West, and Willow Spring and the Campbells provided a most welcome and memorable respite.
