ServiceWe arrived in Montrose in late afternoon. Our reception at the Red Arrow was friendly and the room looked fine. It was large, well appointed, quiet and the beds were comfortable. Imagine our horror when we woke up in the early hours of the morning to discover that we were sharing our beds with hundreds (and yes I do mean hundreds) of bed bugs which we spent the rest of the night killing. By morning the sheets looked like the St Valentine's Day Massacre. We were even more horrified when, on checking out, we were told that the Management actually knew about the problem! We each had in the order of 400 bites on our faces, necks, arms and torsos. We abandoned our trip, returned home and threw away everything that could not be boil washed. The bites took some considerable time to subside and were extremely unsightly and uncomfortable. For quite some time I found it difficult to sleep due to recurrent nightmares about bed bugs. Our letters of complaint to both Best Western HQ and Red Arrow were, initially, unanswered. We did finally get a response the gist of which was that the waiving of the night's room fee was all the apology or compensation we could expect. We are sufficiently well travelled to know that bed bugs are a tricky problem but that a hotel should allocate a room that is known to be infested is beyond belief. So be careful. I'm told that in 18th century Europe it was common to travel with a piglet which was slipped into bed several hours before the travellers retired, hence feeding the bed bugs - the Red Arrow does allow pets - maybe this is the solution.
I was in town on business for a four night stay. My client reserved a very nice looking room, King Size bed and an impressive looking bathroom with a nice looking whirlpool tub, a huge seperate shower, full vanity sink, and skylite. The bed was very comfortable: foam-type mattresss, not too firm or too soft like some others, but....
The internet access as advertised was non-existent, wired or wireless, and tech support could offer no reason for the failure, and Cable for the TV was out of service more than in.
The whirlpool tub looked great, but the whirlpool wouldn't start until the last three minutes of the 15 minute timer (no matter how long or how many times I set the timer, nothing doing until that timer hit the three minute mark).
Worst of all, though was that taking a shower could be near life threatening to a person with slow reflexes and/or a bad heart. I was treated to nice, steady pressure, but with alternating bursts of both scalding hot and then freezing cold. Now I know why the shower was so big--you need the extra room to jump out of the way of the water.

We stayed here for one night to visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The hotel was fine. We had a very friendly welcome from the ladies in reception, despite the fact they had not picked up on our request for a rollaway. They persuaded us that we did not need it, as the beds were so big that our kids could share without any problems.
The room was very spacious, with a door at the back that opened onto a lovely grassy area with a small playpark in. The beds were incredibly soft
Breakfast was fine - cereals, bagels and cream cheese, and a waffle maker, as well as biscuits and gravy (which we didn't try, so can't comment on!)
There is a Chinese Buffet on site where we had dinner. The meal was good, and very reasonably priced.
The outdoor pool looked nice, but it was raining and thundering when we were there, so we didn't get a chance to have a dip. The indoor hot tub looked a bit murky - didn't fancy trying that out!
My only negative comment was that there was a slight damp smell in the hallway. Our room carpet looked as if it had been recently cleaned, and I wonder if it hadn't dried out properly yet.
The location of the hotel is great for going to the Black Canyon - about five miles down the road. Montrose is a great little place for a stopover. The high street had some interesting old buildings, and there were several information boards providing historical information about the town.
If we were ever there again, I might try the Holiday Inn Express instead, as it looked to be a newer building although it was further out of town.
