“You'll find your second home here!”

Black Bear Manor

17 Feb 2008

My wife and I had never booked a B&B before and didn't know what to expect. Let me say this....I'll never do it again....anywhere else! From the moment we walked in, it was like walking into an old friends home. We didn't feel like stangers or mere "guests" but more like we belonged. The place was immaculate inside and out (where the snow wasn't doing it's own beautiful work). Our room was great, very modern, not dumpy like some may expect in an older house. No outside noise at all at any point during the night. I had been contemplating booking at this particular B&B because the food looked so good on the website, and believe me, they did not dissapoint. Stuffed cinnamon apple french toast, fresh fruit, muffins, maple sausage, etc. were the smells that wafted into our room on the second level. Remember the Looney Tunes cartoons where the smells drug the characters about...that was what we woke up to. All was scrumptious! Any needs or questions about Ouray you may have
Phil, Lucie or Carol will take care of it! Don't forget to say "hi" to Smudge the Scotty dog. We didn't just spend a night somewhere, we made new friends in Phil, Lucie, and Carol and we will be returning to visit many times in the future!

“The Best Travel Decision We Ever Made”

Black Bear Manor

We had passed through Ouray once before and stayed a night in town, but it was not until the second time that we visited that we found that it was most memorable. We decided to book our first stay in a bed and breakfast at the Black Bear Manor, this turned out to be probably the best travel decision that we have ever made. The beauty of Ouray and the hospitality of Phil and Lucie at the Black Bear manor have created an official destination that we will continue to return to time and time again.
Phil and Lucie have created a phenomenal experience here. They are not just some hotel managers that you check in and you are a number. You are a guest in thier home and they will treat you like nothing else. Lucie will be up hours before you cooking up a spread of breakfast items that incorporates any eating lifestyle or demand. We ate at the Hilton for breakfast the morning before and it might as well have been McDonald's compared to Lucie's homecooked meal.
Both Phil and Lucie are very personable as well. We sat and talked with them for a long while as if they were our close friends. And if talking is not your thing and you just want to relax and have your privacy, no problem, they are not pushy for conversation at all.
The place itself is fantastic. It sits off a side street right off of main street Ouray. It is about a minute walk to a great row of shops. The place is clean and comfortable with a feeling of home. The only difference is that this home is surrounded by the most beautiful mountains in all of Colorado. They do not call it the "Switzerland of America" for nothing.

Although it's not the fanciest, oldest, grandest etc. B&B iv'e stayed in, for this little remote town it is pretty good. Our accomodations were small, not much of a lounging area, no public computer. It was a little hard to find going up and down the streets in a snowstorm. I don't believe the hottub was actually working, but it was very cold and snowy outside. There was nowhere for you to dust off the snowboots or put the huge coats and equipment when you came in. There was no one to greet us either. But we did arrive later. As an accomodation in Ouray, i have to say it's very good. it's clean, comfortable, friendly. once we finally met the owners the next morning, they were very helpful, and engaging, and most of all the breakfast was Fantastic! defintely the best breakfast in ouray, i've had. in summer i'm sure the house is great. they just need to run some specials on prices, and be more accomodating for winter guests and all the equipment that entails. (ice festival time). overall i' would certainly recommended this B&B. good job.

I read a review about the Black Bear Manor that said the owners, Phil and Lucie would spoil you...and spoil they did. The rooms were lovely and comfortable and the breakfasts were outstanding. This was our first experience staying at a B & B and we loved it. The hosts are very warm and welcoming, and their little Scottie dog Smudge, adds a lot of charm. You will not be disappointed staying here.
