The WWR offers historic train rides on vintage trains. The railroad is run entirely by volunteers and runs pretty much only on weekends and holidays. Periodically, they will have special events, but there are two basic rides. The cheaper one is $8. It is billed as a 90 minute train ride. In reality, you get an approx 30 minute ride out to a picnic stop along the tracks next to a creek. The train stops for about 1/2 hour where you can eat your lunch, if you brought it. Then, you get a 30 minute ride back (backwards).
The second typical ride is $12, this one goes past the picnic stop to Hockessin, DE and then back. (I didn't take this one, because I didn't have time). Check the WWR web site for pricing details and schedules. The web site recommends reservations. I just showed up and didn’t have a problem getting seats without a reservation (early October).
Although the rides are fairly short, I believe it is a good value. The locomotives (mostly steam) are interesting and well maintained, as are the old train cars. The track runs along the creek and the scenery is very nice. The volunteers were very nice, even inviting some people to climb up into the steam locomotive at the station. Good for kids... most people had kids.
On the train they sell snacks, as they do in the station... but these snacks are just bags of chips or vending machine candy, so it is not really appropriate for a full meal. Best to bring your own food if you plan to eat at the picnic stop.
The station also has a small museum, which doesn't have much so won't take much time. The station also has a gift shop that pretty much only has stuff for children.
The WWR is worth it if you are in the area, but I don’t think I would make a special trip for it. I am not a railroad aficionado, but I have also been to the Strasburg Railroad near Lancaster. I would recommend the WWR over the Strasburg RR. I found the Strasburg overpriced and less interesting. If you are a railroad guy, visiting the Strasburg RR would only be interesting because it is near the Pennsylvania railroad museum and it has a really nice gift shop (which, of course, is free).
