“Big Portions, Hometown Feel”

Had dinner midweek with a large group of coworkers. Wine list is fairly typical, nothing very creative, but great prices and a decent selection. Immediately we were served bread with marinara dipping sauce, served warm - a nice touch. Gorgonzola salad was a big hit, and even the "small" was too big! Pasta Fagiole soup was hot and hearty. The stuffed shrimp appetizer was finished rather quickly - totally delicious. The main course portions are absolutely huge! The fish francese was amazing, lemony and crisp, with a side of sauteed spinach with garlic cloves. The lasagna - a house specialty - was average, but filling and tasty. Veal parmigiana was above average. The pasta with clam sauce overflowed with clams, and was also a big hit. Overall, expect huge portions, adequate service, and better than average food.

My husband and I went to Mario's and were disappointed.
We always went to Mario's before they moved to their new location on Military Trail. For some reason (probably chef change) the food quality and quantity is different. The portions are smaller and more pricey. The waiters are slow and it took forever to get our food. When they brought out Mario's Salad, the portion was nothing compared to the past. I was shocked to see the size for $9.00. For the principle and not the amount, I refused it. I remember at the old location, waiters and watresses hustled around the restaurant with no wait time. Yes, you had to wait outside, but when you finally were seated, the food came quickly, delicious, and in large portions for leftovers.
Attitudes of the past were different than the ones at new location.
We found our waitress moved at snails pace, and we did not feel welcomed. Only if my husband yearns for their meatball sub, we order at take-out. But do expect to wait on phone and pick-up for your meal.

We visited Mario's on 03/03/2006.

The food was very good.

Pizza Margherita ($16), stuffed shrimp ($30), salads ($9).

The garlic rolls are terrific, but not something that would be recognized in Italy.

The wine list is satisfactory, but expensive. The bar makes a good Manhattan.

The room is large and pleasant, but noisy. There is a covered patio that is not quite so noisy.

Service was not terrible - more like liesurely.

I recommend it to folks interested in good food in the Moderate-Pricey range.

Mario's of Boca has the best garlic rolls I have ever tasted. The bread basket also contains dry rolls and bread sticks and they give you a marinara sauce for dipping. The downside to this restaurant is that you have to WAIT WAIT WAIT for everything. Service is so bad. If they would just bring the bread out to the table when you are seated it wouldn't be as bad, but no...you have to wait for your bread. We waited at least 30 minutes before we got our drinks and another 10 minutes before the bread came. So, why do we keep going back? Because the food is so good. I love the Chicken Fiorentina($15.95) it comes with mashed potatos that will almost make up for the wait and the Shrimp Alredo($16.95) is great too. The Eggplant pancakes are a must have! For take-out we usually get a pizza and salad. The salads are super big, fresh and excellent. The pizza is great as well.
The wait staff is really bad though and that is why we don't go as much as we would. When we are really hungry we know we can't go to Mario's because it isn't fast, quick, semi-fast, or normal. Also beware that if you are under the age of 50 you will be one of the few. Now that the restaurant is attached to the Holiday Inn, there are a lot more younger people there, but not many. Kids are great take there as well because it is a loud restaurant so kids don't disturb anybody.
There is valet parking, but it is easier to just park on the side of the restaurant where the takeout section is located.
They have a buffet, but it is only available for lunch not dinner.
I would definitely recommend going to Mario's of Boca, just expect to wait for your food and expect the waiter to ignore you.
