This was our third stay at the Pelican Post Motel. After a 16 hour drive to get there we knew from the previous two other stays, Suite #2 would be just what we had expected. [We've also stayed in the Cottage and one of the one bedroom units] The Suite was clean with anything you would need during your stay there. The beds really are comfortable. This is truly a Motel where during your stay there, all you need to bring is a swim suit, suntan lotion, and a few outfits to wear to go out to eat or shopping!

There isn't maid service [which we liked!], but clean towels are delivered daily, and if you want or need extra blankets, sheets, pillows, etc... Alastair [the owner] is quick to bring it to you. There is plenty of closet space and chest of drawers. There is a shower outside to rinse off the sand from your return from the beach, along with plenty of outside seating as well as a bar-b-q grill for tenants to use.

The area is close to the beach, pier, shopping and resturants. A small convinence store is just down the street, but a larger grocery store [Publix], drugstore [Walgreens] and other shops are just a few miles down the road.

From our very first stay at the Pelican Post, we felt the area was safe and sat outside most nights well past midnight with our children and grandchildren. This stay wasn't any different! Locals and visitors alike are friendly and quick to wave and speak to you when you're setting outside.

The Pelican Post reminds us of 'old style Florida', so it not the 'fancy-smancy' type of lodging, but it's clean, close to everything, plus the Owner is super friendly and ready to make your stay there a great experience. We don't think you would find a better rate or nicer room anywhere on the Island.

We've loved our stays at the Pelican Post, and plan on staying there again next year!

The Pelican Post is a wonderful place for a family vacation because of the quiet location and proximity to the beach and other amenities. We have been coming to the Pelican Post for five years and have always had a great time. We stay in Suite 1 which accomodates our family of five very well. We also have a full kitchen so we can cook our meals. The yard is great for the kids to play in and for us to hang out and grill the fresh fish we buy from the local fish markets(The Star Fish and Cortez Kitchen) which are also nearby. The Pelican Post is very nice, and is all we need to make our vacation perfect. The owner, Alastair, is very friendly, and will always take time to listen to suggestions, and help us out in any way.

A very clean motel, quiet location but handy for beach and restaurants. Rooms good size with catering facilities. Manager very friendly and went out of his way to help in every way. We can't wait to return next year. Its our idea of an island holiday, so relaxed, time just passes.

“Loved it, but....”

First let me say that I truly enjoyed my stay at the Pelican Post. It's a quaint hotel on a quiet dead-end street. The neighbors were quiet and friendly, as was the owner. There's a private courtyard for guests. It feels very safe there, and as advertised it's only a few yards to the pier.

With that said, I was bitten by some bugs the first night. I awoke, turned on the lights, and yanked back the covers. Couldn't see a thing, except some tiny black dots on the white sheet. Went back to sleep. After the 2nd night, I was covered. Came home and showed my friend, who immediately identified the problem: bedbugs! I'm surprised, because it was very clean. Hopefully some tourist just brought them in, and they'll take care of it soon.

Management Response

We were alarmed to read the review posted on March 13th this year that mentioned bed bugs.

Through a process of elimination based on what little information the reviewer gave, we have been able to pinpoint the room concerned.

A thorough inspection has been made and no evidence of any kind has been found to support this claim.

Having made an internet search I found a report prepared by the University of Ohio. The reviewer mentions black dots in the bed. The report describes the bugs as brown, between 3/16" and 1/4" long and easily visible.

Also, the reviewer has not based her claim on the diagnosis of a doctor or dermatologist - but by a 'friend'.

However, we are of course taking this allegation very seriously. The 'bug man' is on his way and the housekeeper now has a list of remedial tasks to carry out to alleviate any potential problem – courtesy of the internet.

I am very uncomfortable with the thought that someone can make a casual comment in a review which could conceivably be devastating to a small establishment like the Pelican Post. I did not read the review until after a potential guest brought it to my attention less than 48 hours after it was posted. This shows the tripadvisor site is doing its job – advising. Maybe tripadvisor should be asking people to substantiate this kind of allegation before it is posted.

UPDATE:
I have just completed a second inspection of the room concerned with the Anna Maria Pest Control entomologist – John Durkin. He has given the room a clean bill of health and stated that there is no evidence of any infestation.

Alastair.

“Wonderful stay”

We stayed at the Pelican Post Motel in November 2005 in the largest suite - which is ideal for a family with young children as they have their own separate bedroom -.
The motel is steps away from the beautiful Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island. (The island has a free tram which travels the length of the island which you can hop on and off as many times as you like.)
Pelican Post is in an ideal location, the beach just a minutes walk in one direction and the quieter inlet a few steps in the opposite direction. There are plenty of restaurants close by and a good Pizza bar at the top of the next block.
The motel did not have it's own pelican, but did have the next best thing - an egret - which visited us daily to the great delight of our grandson. The whole family enjoyed our stay at the motel and would highly recommend it. Thanks also to the proprietor Alistair who was always available to offer helpful advice and give you good information on the locality.
