My husband and I stayed in a Hidden Dunes cottage and really enjoyed it. We liked the shaded, tropical walk to the beach (took about 4 minutes), with fountains along the way. There are three pools here, reserved for the adjacent units. (You can't use the condo pool if you stay in the cottages). The pool for the cottages is by far the largest. It was also the cleanest pool I've seen. We liked being away from the beach, but the resort also includes larger villas (closer to the beach) and a high-rise condominium directly on the beach. A lagoon with a seasonal grill added charm, too.
It was quiet -- just what we were looking for -- in this off-season. There are six nice clay tennis courts and a resident pro, but games are not included in the price of the rental. We paid only $135 a night for a one bedroom, 1.5 bath directly adjacent to the pool. It included a screened porch perfect for breakfast. The unit was well-equipped and the staff was helpful, allowing us to choose our unit from the photos on the Internet. There was a quiet, spacious feel here, with lots of tropical foliage and beautiful landscaping, that reminded us of resorts further south. It is located between the outlet and Sandestin. The beach was crowded but the cottage area provided the escape we needed.
If you want to be on the beach, opt for the condos. If you prefer shade and more space, consider the villas and cottages.
