We live in Hollywood and deal with I95 traffic and the rude people of south florida on a daily basis, We took our Gheenoe (canoe with motor) and 90pound shepherd and spent the week end at River Wilderness Apartments in Everglades City. It was wonderfully quiet and peaceful, the fishing for us novices was not so good just catfish, (but we saw some great catches on other boats) The apartment was nice, very basic, but clean and very affordable with a nice balcony over the river, the people were very very helpful and charming. We ate at City Seafood which was Ok, service was also just OK, we are not fussy people perhaps just accoustomed to faster, and more attentive service because of where we live.(perhaps we need to learn to slow down?) The Oyster bar had great service, and the food was Ok, The Ice cream parlor on the circle, ( I think it was called Susie's )was ever so quaint and very nicely decorated with lots of antique signs an ancient gas pump, and many other interesting things, but we never did get any service on Sunday afternoon, although I used the facilities as did Tom while we waited I helped myself to the Menu's and decided what we wanted, but we never did see anyone serving, so cannot comment on the food as we did not wait any longer, instead we went west to Goodland and Marker 8 Restaurant for the best meal of the week-end. We also explored the left hand turn of the Turner River with our gheenoe about 8 miles through the mangroves, which was so quiet and pretty, this was the highlight of our week-end, not for the faint of heart as the water was quite low in places and I did wonder on occasion if we were lost in the swamps!! The dog jumped out into the mud which was quite eventful and smelly but it stopped him from wanting out to run on the banks of the river. I like Everglades City and the people, but they do need to pull their socks up on the service and food in the restaurants, stopping for a beer and waiting 10 minutes while the 2 workers surf facebook just is not acceptable in my book!! But I will go back for the peace and quiet and adventure in the swamps!! But only in the cooler months the bugs were starting to come out.
