We spent only one evening in this hotel as a stop between two destinations. I suspect I must have expected something a bit more grand because I was a bit disappointed in the registration area and the public lobby; although there was one lovely room with floor to ceiling windows, a nice view of the ocean and a big TV.
We had a standard room. Our room looked over what I think was industrial air conditioning equipment housed on the floor below us. If we stood just right and looked far to our left we could get a glimpse of the ocean. We did not pay for ocean views, and are not complaining because we did not get them.
Unlike so many beach hotels it smelled good. There was none of that funky sun-block, wet sand, wet swimming suit smell that seems so prevalent in beach front properties. I liked the way this hotel smelled from the minute I walked in to it.
Our room was tastefully decorated in relaxing shades of blue and beige. The A/C worked very well....so well in fact that we were appreciative of the down comforter during the middle of the night. We set the thermostat to 78 and the room was always nearly, but never, uncomfortably cool.
The bathroom was spacious with a lovely vanity and a mirror surrounded by panels of light. It was unique and quite delightful. As other reviews have mentioned. The bathroom does have a louvered window that opens into the bedroom. This is not the first hotel I have visited with this feature. I have stayed in several that had the window without the option of closing it. We were in no way distressed by the window or the door of the bathroom. Our privacy was never compromised. A person would have to be very determined to put his/her eye directly against the slat in order to view a person in the bathroom, and I never travel with anyone who would have such boorish behaviors.
The bedroom furniture features a clever design with room for a flat screen TV, a hidden mini-bar/refrigerator, room safe, glasses etc. There is a small coffee maker for that first cup in the morning. There is a convenient desk with ample electrical outlets to re-charge all those things with which we travel. It did not work at first, but my husband crawled around under the desk and figured out how to plug it in.
The beds were exceptionally comfortable; although the strange little pillows were a bit odd? The linens were nice. The towels were of a good size and quality. I did not recognize the brand of the amenities.
There are a few things I would change before I could give this property an excellent rating. First the lack of any option but $25+/day valet parking is, I believe, somewhat abusive. If a hotel cannot provide some parking for guests they should just add the cost of parking to the room charge. I dislike the nickle and dime approach. I would assume that the vast majority of the guests at this hotel arrived in a car so just put the cost of the parking lot into the cost of the room. In addition, it was just obnoxious to have to wait to have the car delivered. We could have gotten it much faster if we could have just walked to where it was parked. Calling ahead seemed to have no impact on whether the car was obtained in a timely manner or not. The whole valet scene was kind of ridiculous.
The same type of trap happened at breakfast. The hotel offers two options: a Starbucks drink and pastry or breakfast at Shula's. We elected to have a full breakfast at Shula's. I paid over $100 for breakfast for four people, and none of us had any side dishes or alcohol. When a cup of coffee is $4 and four pieces of French Toast are $15 it does not take long for breakfast to become an expensive affair. I would have appreciated the option of a more reasonably priced cafe for breakfast.
One member of our family uses a C-Pap and there were no available electrical outlets anywhere near the one night stand by the bed. The C-Pap had to be placed on the floor, which made it difficult for the person depending on this machine.
The bathtub had one of those drains that you push to close and push to open, but the drain in our bathtub never really closed. I often enjoy soaking in a hot tub for a few minutes, but since the water drained right out of the tub, that was not possible. It would not have been an issue anyway because the water was not sufficiently hot as to encourage me to linger in it. Obviously the hotel does not provide hot water, just very warm water.
We stayed at this four star hotel during off season, and we had an outstanding rate for the type of property it is. I would certainly return for that price. If, however, I had paid the regular rack rate, in-season rate for the room I would have been somewhat disappointed.
