Stayed at the Best Western Oakland Park for 7 days in March 2008. We used it as a base camp for a beach vacation. The hotel was perfect for that purpose.
We were in a non-smoking standard room on the third floor. There didn't seem to be a bellhop but there were rolling racks that guests could use to bring luggage up to their room. The rooms are organized around a court yard containing the pool, Tiki Bar and some patio tables. There are stairways at each corner and an elevator in the middle of the floor. Parking for one car is free, at check in you will get a paper permit to leave in the window when your car is parked in the lot.
Our room wasn't fancy but it was clean, quiet and everything worked well. The room had an alarm clock, TV with remote and basic cable, coffee maker and supplies, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, a safe (at no extra charge), microwave and refrigerator. There was a telephone on one of the night stands and another one on the desk. Voicemail is included. There were also plenty of towels and a copy of the Miami Herald by the door each morning.
The hotel is secure, very clean and well maintained. Everywhere we went, the staff was cleaning or maintaining something. I didn't see one piece of trash or cigarette butt on the ground during the entire stay. After 10 PM the gates at the bottom of the stairs were shut, although guests could swipe their room key in the door for access.
We visited the Tiki Bar twice. It had several TV's, piped in music and plenty of seating to relax after a tough day of lounging on the beach, which is about 10 minutes away by car. The bartenders were very friendly and would order carry out for guests from nearby restaurants. Didn't use the wireless internet, Business Center, Fitness Center or Laundry Room (which also had vending machines).
Can't forget the nifty complimentary breakfast. Every morning there was all you can eat scrambled eggs, sausage patties, toast, muffins, bagels, Danish, cereal, fruit, yogurt, coffee, milk and juice, served buffet style and a self-service waffle maker. (I probably forgot to mention something, there was so much.)
As for dinner, Miller's Fort Lauderdale Ale House, which has very good food at reasonable prices, is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. For something a little more upscale, the Kitchenetta restaurant across the street from MiIller's has wonderful Italian food.
Anyone on a budget or who likes a good value and does not need to be pampered should consider staying at BWOPI. But please leave a room for us when we return next March!
