My husband and I stayed at the Ocean Manor over Memorial Day weekend, and had a great weekend! However, I do think we got lucky on this one. The pros and cons detailed below:
-I was very nervous from reading the reviews, and even more nervous when we got there and they said they did not have our reservation (even though we had called earlier in the week to confirm). It turned out they had given our room to someone else, then sent us to a room on the fifth floor that was already occupied! Also, when we checked in (on Saturday night), the front desk clerk received numerous phone calls about a rowdy group on the tenth floor, for which they eventually called the police. Anyway, after returning to say that our room was already occupied, he checked us into room 300, which was an Oceanfront Efficiency (the website lists this at $159 per night; we paid $100 per night on Skoosh.com).
-Our room was great! It was on the corner of the building overlooking the pool and ocean. It seems like it was one of their newly remodeled rooms, with a mini kitchen and brand new bathroom with walk-in shower. Very clean, and our housekeeping service did a great job each day. The only thing I didn't like was that there were no phone books or hotel guides that listed the restaurant hours, menus, housekeeping numbers, how to dial out, etc. We also had two double beds instead of a queen or king, but after the first fiasco with the rooms we didn't want to go and switch, plus I was afraid to see what the non-remodeled rooms looked like! Our room was very quiet; we didn't hear any outside noise nor noise from across the hall or next door. The beds were okay.
-The beach and pool area were fabulous! I'm not sure what other reviewers mean by the towel situation; we were allowed to bring a bag with towels, water bottles, and snacks. Chairs cost $3 and umbrellas cost $10, and you have them all day. They also gave us hotel towels.
-The Tiki Bar and Bamboo Beach Cafe were great, although a little pricey. But I think we would have paid the same anywhere else, and you pay for the convenience of drinking frozen drinks on the beach!
-Yes, the building is dated and parts of it were in disrepair, but nothing was dirty. The staff was generally pretty friendly and helpful. I wouldn't classify this is a resort, considering they didn't have a jacuzzi or spa and had a few hidden fees (you pay a $15 "resort fee" for the valet parking).
-We did not eat at the "Rumor Has It" restaurant although it always seemed to be full. Other than the rowdiness of Saturday night, the rest of the weekend was calm, and it seemed that the majority of the guests had checked out Monday morning. There is a Winn Dixie and other stores and restaurants within walking distance, and even more just a short drive away.
Bottom Line: this is not a four star resort, but if you're on a budget and you push to get the room you want, you'll have a great time! If you're over thirty and come during Spring Break, that's not even common sense, as I can imagine it gets a little crazy. We saw many families who also seemed to be enjoying themselves.
