Just when I thought that our vacation could not get any worse, we found ourselves staying at the Silver Spray for our last night in Florida.
We were in room 23, ground floor right next to the office. This small room had so much furniture crammed into it, there was only a very narrow walkway (at best, 2 feet wide) through the room to the bathroom area. There were 2 beds (full and a twin), two recliners, a tall dresser, night stand and 2 kitchen chairs (this room was not an efficiency, by the way).
When we first walked into the room, I could have cried. We had just spent a week in the Keys at a not-so-great place and this just topped it off.
The tv was on an arm near the ceiling and received only local channels. The headboard on the bed was barely attached to the frame and was leaning down toward the mattress. It looked like it could fall on our heads at any time.
The bathroom had a 1950's feel....but not at all in a good way. Although, compared to the bedroom, it felt roomy. Old baby blue tile, old fashioned sink. The ceramic built-in soap dish was fine, but what used to be the toothbrush holder was broken off, leaving jagged edges of tile exposed. The light over the sink was a bare bulb. The paint on the walls was peeling in several places (most severely in the bathtub area).
The "decor" of the room only emphasized what a dive we were staying in. A wall clock that did not work, bizarre vases full of sticks with shells glued to them, a small plastic shark was on top of the dresser, along with a small vase embellished by a scrunchie. The curtains were made of a shiny, stiff peach material that looked like a vinyl shower curtain. One of the recliners was very worn, with holes in the fabric.
There was no alarm clock in the room and we certainly didn't trust the guy in the office to give us a wake up call, so we ended up buying one at a Walgreens.
Both of us were seriously concerned about the cleanliness of the bed and worried about bedbugs or other critters. Sure enough, the next morning I had a huge spider bite on my leg (well, I hope it was just a spider).
To top all of this off, the walls were paperthin. I could here the office guy taking a shower as if he was right in our bathroom. He got a cell phone call from someone out front and I could clearly hear both sides of the conversation!
My advice......stay far, far away!
