We stayed here in July 2006. It was our first trip to the keys, and we were mesmerized by the peacefulness there. Popps made it worthwhile. The staff were friendly and accommodating to the nth! Although the rooms are a little dated, this added to the charm. We felt as if we'd stepped back in time, which was delightful. Very stressfree and relaxing. We grilled outside our room and ate on the beach. Until you've relaxed in a hammock under the palm trees on the beach with a margarita in hand, and listened only to the peaceful sound of soft wind, you haven't lived!
The beach was clean and the water clear! We're going back again this summer just for Popps!

After reading the previous reviews I was worried about Popp's but ended up being satisfied. This is a budget motel so the rooms were "well worn". I believe there are 9 rooms and we stayed in room #9 which is closest to the beach and had a view of the water. We had friends who stayed in room #7which looked identical to ours but was cheaper. I'm guessing we paid more for the view.
We were told that the Keys were hit hard by a hurricane last season which may be why the grounds were unkempt for previous reviewers. I didn't think the grounds looked that bad. I didn't see matresses or rugs lying around. You can swim right off the beach and the water was crystal clear. Nicer than the beach at Pennekamp State Park. I would stay here again.

I spent a week at Popps in March of 2006. My unit was clean and well taken care of, but the grounds around the area needed a lot of TLC. There were dead branches an old mattress, a rug, pieces of cinder block, filled trash cans, and the like scattered through the area. The waterfront was nice and fairly well taken care of. I would go back again for it is low key and comfortable.

Our experience was marginally acceptable. The beachside setting was very nice. The room furnishings were on the edge of being acceptable. The sheets were pilled and the towels were well used as was almost every thing in the way of room furnishings. Everything did function, but one wondered how long they would function. As was alluded to in another review the personnel were clearly not service minded. We wondered what would happen if we had a problem with something. Fortunately we did not. I am not sure we would stay there again if we return to the Keys even though the price was not high.
