I can't believe the people love this motel. We stayed at the Heliconia room and it was awful; the airconditioning made a lot of noise so we couldn't sleep, the room was very old and too small, we couldn't even put our luggage in it. I was bitten by a lot of bugs. So never again here! We annulated one night, while we had booked twice.
And be aware of the old lady, you have to pay before you have even seen the room or have slept in it. In other hotels, you only have to show your creditcard and can pay afterwards. I think the lady knows very well of the problems and that's why she wanted us to pay before we could see it or sleep in it. We regretted that.
I won't recommend this motel to anyone!

We enjoyed our stay, but can not give a good review due potential problems we noted.

The efficiency we stayed in, Bird of Paradise, need some attention to. The burners on the stove did not work well, you have to wiggle and plug them in, otherwise only 1/2 work. The pots and pans were mismatched, lids don't fit, but you can still cook a few dishes. Utensils and plates were adequate, but could use a restocking. My recommendation for the management is to gather up all the pots and pans in the whole resort and match them up correctly, or buy new ones.

Small ants colonize the counter, so make sure your food is in tight container, bags, or the refrigerator.

If you are not used to geckos, expect a little one to wander into the hotel. They are cute! My son caught a little one in our room, and caught a number of larger ones outside. They are rather tame compared to geckos from other areas.

You can fish off the dock, but I think the fish food dispenser on the dock make the fish too full to bite your hook. Zillions of barracudas are around the dock, but I couldn't hook enough little lives fishes so I didn't have any luck. We stayed at the rock reef resort a short distance from this one, and I caught alot of barracudas and fish the last time down here.

The "beach" is not real sandy, but just a gravely place for boats to launch. The water is clean, but other fisherman have thrown fish parts and junk to make it look a little messy. But we enjoyed snorkeling under the dock... Be careful if you snorkel out too far, as the jetski don't obey the "no wake rule" and might hit you. I see other snorkelers towed diving flag so they don't get hit.

I would not swim at dusk or dawn, as they catch large sharks at that time.

Oh, the most important point - the owner has added too much gravel to the driveway, and the heavy rain runs off into the low area - the hotel rooms. We had water seeping upward through the floor in heavy rain, which receeded after the rain end. The porch also flooded, but receeded when the rain dry.

I would recommend that the management grade their driveway much much lower, to allow for drainage, or to install drain pipes to let rain water run down to the beach.

We had mosquito in the room, which is a problem no matter where you stay. It is just sad that some house keeping folks leave the door open when they are working... It makes the night miserable for the guests.

Big plusses - the hotel is within walking distant to a nice little cuban restaurant, an italian restaurant is at the front gate, a bait shop is next to the cuban restaurant, CVS/Walgreen is stone throw across the street. And as I recall, I think that Burger king and McD is just a shortwalk away in a plaza with a large scuba shop.

I can't comment on the other units here, but they have 2 that have ocean view and high drainage, and might not have the water problem that we had.

We appreciate the feedback. All guests are surveyed and their input is taken seriously. With respect to the Bird of Paradise, a new stove has been installed, pots&pans and flatware have been replaced throughout the entire property. We look forward to serving these guests again in the near future.

If you want to capture the "old Florida" feel, then this is the place to stay! It's very quaint and the cottages are very clean. The mattresses are a bit soft, but the ambiance of the place makes up for it! We only stayed one night on our way to Key West, but we stopped in on our way back through. We would stay there again!! It has a very homey feel and everyone there is extremely friendly.
Another bonus is that Mrs. Macs Kitchen is only 2 doors down and the food there is fantastic!

“You get what you pay for”

Well the price of this hotel looked like a steal according to the pictures online. And it did look good from the outside but the hotel is in serious need of TLC. According to some of the reviews it looks like the place to stay so I am wondering if perhaps there is a big difference depending on what room you book. My room was very small. There were ants coming through the door. The bed was so uncomfortable and it made so much noice it was embarrassing. The blanket on the bed had stains on it. The shower used to have a window in it and was all rusted. The mirror above the sink was broken. This room was really in poor condition. I called the Marriott and thank goodness they had availability the rest of the week. If you are looking for a place just to sleep and not spend anytime in then ask for the most comfortable bed they have and go for it. The outside of the hotel is very cute. Not much beach space at all so if you are looking to sunbathe you will have to go up the road to the park...it is sad because this hotel could really be an awesome place to stay.

“Very Nice Vacation Spot with Friendly Staff”

I really liked the Hungry Pelican, which was a place recommended by our Dive Shop. I would stay at the Pelican again but not use the same dive shop (Silent World).

Tthe covered outdoor check-in and breakfast area adjacent to the entrance to the office was nice (tables and topical setting with a fountain/pond). I also liked the two friendly cats lounging around the property. It was a very homey atmosphere, lush with tropical trees and plants. Breakfast was packaged pastries, muffins, fresh fruit, coffee and juice. The pastries were especially good.

Ozzie is a great asset to that property. He was so helpful and very patient when we checked in and with any needs we had during our stay. We had a room with a kitchen area (stove and kichen table) but we really didn't need it. All rooms have a microwave and refrigerator, which is all we used. It just gave us a large room. Next time I'd stay in a regular room. The size isn't that important because we won't be there much.

The two-dock area gave a nice view, a place to relax and a beach-like area. It was a nice vacation spot.
