“The Keys To Our Trip”

Azul del Mar

9 Jan 2007
10/10 found this review helpful

We had a crazy 2006 to say the least. I started researching prices on a quick getaway for my wife and I. I found some really good airfare to Ft Lauderdale, and a great rental car rate too.

I booked our trip for January 5th to the 8th. We flew out early on the 5th, and were in Florida by early afternoon.

We immediately drove to Dania beach in Ft Lauderdale just to get our feet wet and to feel the sand between our toes, then it was off to sitting in Friday afternoon traffic on the Florida Turnpike for 2 hours on our way to Key Largo (this was the only negative on our trip along with some airline delays).

I surprised my mate with 2 nights at the amazing Azul Del Mar boutique hotel in Key Largo. Took the money we saved on the airfare and put it into a few nights at the nicest place we have ever stayed at. It may cost a few dollars more than what would be an 'average at best' hotel stay, but it is somewhere that one has to experience. I think they should change the name to Azul Del Mar-velous!

Our key was convieniently left outside for us by the office staff at Azul Del Mar since we were going to be arriving late. We checked into our amazing room (suite really), and then it was off to Bayside Grille for dinner overlooking the water. Excelent meal, I had the Pasta with Shrimp and Chicken, she had a great Steak and salad.

Next morning, it was off to a private snorkeling charter with Morning Star Charters. Captain Rick had actually called me on our way down Firday nite on my cellphone to let me know that he thought it would be to rough to snorkel on Saturday. We were bummed as we were really looking forward to it, but I appreciated his call and the fact that he did not want to waste our time, or money on a trip that would not be very memorable.
However, Sayurday morning we awoke to calm winds, and after a call to Captain Rick of Morning Star Charters, we were both in agreement to give it a shot. It turned out to be great!
We had a blast, and the weather was great, and Captain Rick was a truly awesome host. We had the fortune of being the only ones on the 50 foot sailboat he uses to charter only 6 at a time on. We made some great memories!

After our snorkel trip, it was back to Azul for a trip to our private in room whirlpool bath, and then some relaxing on the Azuls private deck. It was pretty cool that evening when at the resort right next to the deck, a couple got married! It was amazing, they even had a live Saxophone player! They had the reception right there on the deck facing the bay! Cool! We watched for awhile, and then left for our own special night at Morada Bay Restaurant about 20 miles south in Islamorada. Another one of the highlites of our trip, having Dinner literally on the beach by tiki torchlight with a live lite singer/guitarist playing. Another amazing time together for us, and the food was to die for also. Best Prime Rib with glaze ever.

Sunday morning we slept in and then got ready to check-out. After we drove to Key West and spent the day on a rented scooter exploring the town. We had lunch at Pat Croces Rum Runners amongst a bunch of Eagles fans prior to the big game that afternoon. That was cool since I am originally from Phily, and a die-hard Eagles fan. We ate dinner at the Outback Steakhouse in Tavernier on the way back to Ft Lauderdale for our hotel stay prior to leaving Monday morning.

Our trip back was a long one after some airport delays again in Atlanta, but we had so many grat memories tro while the time away by. I would reccommend the Azul Del Mar in Key Largo to anyone, and also Morning Star Charters for snorkeling, sailing, or anything else water related. Our meal at Morada Bay was a great highlight too.

Our day trip to Key West was good, and if you've never been there before like we hadn't, then it's a must see, but if it's relaxing you want with your mate, then Key Largo is the best place to be as far as we're concerned.

“Paid almost $2,000 Not To Stay at the Azul del Mar”

Azul del Mar

We were forced to pay almost $2,000 "Not" to stay at Azul del Mar and Azul Key West. These little hotels are run by the same owners. Reserved a room for Dec. 5-8 and a room for Dec. 8-12.

Nov. 28th - spouse rushed to emergency.

Nov. 29th - had to cancell the rooms: 7 Days in Advance of the 1st reservation and 10 Days in Advance of the 2nd reservation. That's (10) Ten Days in Advance!

The cancellation policy is an absurd 14 days in advance. We were billed the full price of just under $2,000 CDN.

A 50% fee would be reasonable if the hotel had been fully booked - but it wasn't. There were vacancies. Beware.

We didn't have cancellation insurance - we've never cancelled a trip in over 34 years. Besides - 10 days cancellation notice!!! Beware.

We were offered a 25% discount if we were to stay at a future date. --No thanks we will never stay there.

Azul Del Mar and Azul Key West are two small, family-run hotels. It’s what makes them so special. We feel for any guest whose travel plans go awry for whatever reason. Fog in London, snow in Denver or in this unfortunate case, a family illness. It affects us greatly both emotionally and financially - as six other families depend on these hotels for their livelihood. We receive very few cancellations but last minute exceptions create a lot of extra work as we try hard to re-book rooms and offer a refund to our guests as they can attest. We send emails to more than 50 hotels informing them of our cancellation in the event they sell out. Contact is made with our local Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center to inform them of the situation and simultaneously we delete the reservation from our system so online customers have every opportunity to book. Despite this, if the rooms are not re-booked, we must adhere to our Cancellation Policy whether the hotel is full or not. This Policy offers guests who book ahead the opportunity to cancel up to 14 days prior to arrival despite the fact we may have turned travelers away during the interim period. It is clear, concise and prominent on both our website and every email confirmation. There are no secrets. This guest had a reservation at both Azul locations commencing seven days from the date of cancellation. His rooms were reserved specifically for him for two months after making the reservation. So while the cancellation did give us a seven day window to re-book, on the flip side his reservation took them off the market for 53 days. By chance, we had another guest choose to cancel over New Year and while we turned away many calls in the months and weeks leading up to the holidays, by the time of cancellation people had made other arrangements and their rooms went unoccupied. These instances are rare, sometimes unavoidable and always regrettable but it is unfair to tarnish our excellent reputation while completely aware of our Cancellation Policy all along. If you cannot afford to cancel your vacation at the eleventh hour then obtain travel insurance. And if you or a family member is prone to illness then reassess the situation before your “grace period” expires. However, should the unexpected happen then rest assured we will continue to do our best to re-book your room and refund payment whenever possible.

We stayed 5 nights at the Azul 11/11-11/16 and in one word, it was WONDERFUL. This is the place for utter peace and relaxation. The suites are fabulous and so comfortable you don't feel like you're in a hotel. The attention to detail and amenities are worth every penny. If you are looking for a place to really sit back, relax and decompress from your hectic work-life, this is it. There is snorkeling, scuba, fishing available nearby and the hotel will assist you with recommendations on where to book these activities. There are kayaks and bicycles available at the hotel, but that's about the extent of activity on-site, which was fine for us. The beach area is very small, but there are tiki huts and a hammock/picnic area for further relaxation opportunity. They even have gas bbq grills if you want to make your own meals and the kitchenette is fully stocked with all utensils, dishes, etc.. We hope to go back to the Azul in the very near future!

    • Disliked — Very minor, but the lighting in the bathroom was too dark...I had trouble seeing to remove my contact lenses at night!
    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — The Azul delivers pastries every weekday morning at 8:30 am right to your door. There is a Publix just south of the hotel for picking up other items (kitchenette is fully stocked).

“Heaven!”

Azul del Mar

My husband and I stayed in Azul del Mar in july - it was heavenly! I just wish I could go back....it was incredibly relaxing. Although the surrounding neighbourhood is not too fancy, it was perfect for what we needed. We ate some good Thai food close by, and grilled our own steak and lamb chops on the barbecue at the hotel another night. It is very close to John Pennekamp park which gave us our first opportunity to snorkel. We took a catamaran from the park out to a reef about 3 miles offshore, and it was the best day we've had in a long time! The room we had was superb, and the service was great. We loved the little perks like the kayaks and the music in the tiki huts. There was plenty of room for everyone who was there, and the hotel was fully booked. The little beach is small, but fine for a paddle! The best time we've ever had...

We stayed only in one night in Azul del Mar and wish we could have stayed longer. The property is really neat and clean and in one word beautiful. From the fresh pastries in the morning to the sound machine loaded with relaxing music in the tiki hut, it's the little things that make this hotel lovely. The rooms are not only pretty but well thought out too. A great bed, microwave, dish-washer, huge bathroom, aveda bath products and a nice sitting area. Everything you need. The 2 BBQ grill give you the opportunity to have a great barbecue you can enjoy in the hammock. You can rent a kajak to explore Key Largo on the water or DVDs if you want to watch TV. We preferred to watch the awesome sunset from the dock. Karol is a very gentle person and called us right away when they found a ring my girlfriend forgot in the bathroom. If you want to go to Key Largo you have to stay at Azul del Mar. For us it was the most pleasant stay we had on our vacation.
