Stayed at Ocean Key 10/2-10/7/05 w/ the husband. First time in Key West. Hotel is at the very end of Duval St, close to all the action. Purchased the "Romance" package for $279/night, which included breakfast daily (off the menu, not buffet) in the Hot Tin Roof restaurant and 2 drinks/each daily at the Pier Bar. Made reservation by calling hotel directly, I highly recommend doing that vs internet as we got a better deal than what was advertised online.
Room was on top floor (room 514), we had reserved jr suite, but when we arrived we found that we had been upgraded to an oceanfront suite. King size 4 poster bed & tv in one room, living room had tv, mini bar small table. Each room had vaulted ceilings and ceilng fans. Bathroom was nothing exciting, and no jacuzzi, but I'm pregnant and can't use a jacuzzi anyway, so it wasn't missed. The view from the deck was unbelieveable. Our room overlooked the pier, panoramic ocean views, simply gorgeous. When the bellman brought us to the room we thought they had made a mistake, it was a great value for what we paid. Only one day did we wake up with a cruise ship outside our window, and it only blocked a small part of the view. Most of the ships tend to dock in front of the Hilton -I would be mad if I paid for an oceanview there!
Service was really good, although we tend to be pretty low-maintainence. The turndown service was a special treat, with a shell left on the bed every night. Found most staff to be extremely friendly.
Only ate at the Hot Tin Roof for breakfast, which was very good.
Pool is on the small side, but very clean and again had a great view of the water. Service at the pool was spotty, it depended on who was staffing it that day. Chaise lounges were comfy. Tiles around pool do get hot on sunny days.
Saw/heard very few kids, which was nice. It's not a hotel that I would choose to bring children to, not much for them to do there.
Spa was nice, albeit a bit spendy. Had a great prenatal massage from Andrea.
Parking at the hotel is expensive, $18/day, but you're in Key West and there isn't much parking. If we were to do it again we would have turned the car in at the Key West airport after we drove down from Miami. You don't need a car in Key West. Walk or rent a scooter or electric car.
Only complaint was the live music at the Pier Bar was really loud at night. If your room overlooks the Pier you will hear it inside your room. They play 7 pm-11 pm, so if you're an "early to bed" type of person or sensitive to noise, you should book a room overlooking Mallory Sq or the city.
Through the conceriege we booked a snorkeling/scuba trip on the Sea Breeze, which docks at the end of Front St next to Galleons Resort. A 5 min walk. Highly recommend it. $35 for snorkeling, and I believe $65-70 for scuba. Boat takes both snorkelers and scuba divers at same time, which is nice for couples in which only one is scuba diving. Reef is 7 miles from Key West. 2 dives, 50 min each. We went to Sand Key & Rock Key. Visibility was 40 ft, saw a ton of fish as well as barracuda, 2 nurse sharks, a huge spotted eagle ray (stingray) and a sea turtle. Good crew, including the captain's dog, Shayla. Mac was our favorite dive master. We went back a second time and they took $10 off.
We also went on the Conch Train on a cloudy morning - skip it. $25 for 90 min tour was a rip off. Buy a guidebook and walk it/moped it yourself.
Our favorite restaurant was Fogarty's on Duval. Get the crab-stuffed grouper - delicious!
Overall - a great vacation in laid-back Key West & definitely recommend the Ocean Key Resort!
