Our expectations of the Dewey House and La Mer at the Southernmost Hotel and Resorts in Key West were crushed before we were even given the keys to our room. We arrived early and were ready to sunbathe but lovely Dora was willing to check us into our room. This all before the check-in time since the room hadn't been in use the night prior to our arriving. While standing with Dora there at the counter, she radioed John C. to see if he could explain the amenities and help us into our room. His reply was far beyond pleasant and made us and other guests in the lobby very uncomfortable. Certainly not a welcome we were looking for as we were celebrating our ten year anniversary. John C made it clear that we were putting a halt to what he was involved in and was sure to mention we were lucky to be checked in early. He met us in the lobby then led us directly to our room while rambling through the amenities pointing in multiple directions. He muttered through so quickly we weren't sure if we were speaking to an auctioneer or an innkeeper. Before leaving us at our room John questioned whether we could handle two keys. Then insisted if we lost one of those room keys it was going to be a charge of $75. - need I mention that on the Notice to Guests posted on the wall the figure was $50. Planning a wedding? This facility has a mere private man made beach which is shared with an open-air bar where stragglers from Duval Street are welcome to stroll in anytime. We've stayed in hotels and motels which were far less stuffy than this facility. Do yourself a favor and save your money - stay in a Key West Bed and Breakfast! Take a short ride to Smathers Beach where there is lots of room to stretch out. It was a breath of fresh air when we checked out of the Dewey House!
