La Mer Hotel and Dewey House

We stayed in the Dewey House for three nights and had an incredible stay. It was quiet, romantic, well-located near the action but enough off the beaten path. The private beach was amazing (tops optional according to a sign which I thought was a joke until I saw someone taking it seriously).

The room was clean and well-appointed. The bathroom was huge with a jacuzzi tub. It was immaculate. (We had the room with a private enclosed deck.)

They served the BEST BREAKFAST I've ever had at a B and B-- fresh fruit, French pastries, espresso. It was self-serve, but well presented.

The best part of our stay was the little tiki bar attached to the hotel. Best. Pina Coladas. Ever. I had one each afternoon while wave watching.

Since this is part of the Southernmost Hotel group, the amenities of all three hotels are available. I enjoyed the pool at the hotel next door since Dewey House is just that---a house. There was another hotel across the street with gorgeous pool inside a garden-like area with a tiki bar that I never got a chance to use.

Be prepared to walk---comfy shoes are a must. The main attractions seem to be on Duval Street. It is about one mile from the Dewey House to the far end of Duval where the sunset celebration and street performers are. Or you can rent a scooter onsite, which we did.

We rode all over Key West, and found that the beach at Fort Jackson far surpassed any other beach in the area.

One note---Key West is not kid-friendly and I don't believe they are allowed at the Dewey House. I would NOT ever take my kids to Key West. It's a bit of a decadent environment where "anything goes."

We booked our trip to celebrate my 40th birthday with two other couples. We all had the first floor to the Dewey House, which was nice to be so close to each other. However, my husband and I got room 415 right next to the kitchen, which woke us up every morning with breakfast set up. It has a nice small porch opening onto the beach, but is VERY NOISY!! The banging of the plates and the noise from the second floor isn't the nicest way to wake up every morning on vacation! This really is my only complaint and would consider returning on our next trip, but we would like to try the La Mer next time. We really enjoyed the breakfast and afternoon tea. Everything was very fresh, but we never did see any waffles being made. We went to Camilles down the street for breakfast and lunch several times and highly recommend it! As most know, Key west is not known for the pretty beaches, so be prepared for dirty water and alot of seaweed. There is a pier to go into the water and sunbathe, but not very relaxing due to the heavy construction going on next door!
We enjoyed the huge next door pool though several times.
We have stayed several different places in key west, including the Gardens, which we loved! Great LOCATION, quiet and beautiful! We chose Dewey House to get a view, knowing the location requires more walking, scooters or taxis to get around. We didn't mind any of this, because the place is beautiful and well kept! I only hope if we decide to stay here again, we can get a quieter room.

“Save Your Money!”

La Mer Hotel and Dewey House

SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Our expectations of the Dewey House and La Mer at the Southernmost Hotel and Resorts in Key West were crushed before we were even given the keys to our room. We arrived early and were ready to sunbathe but lovely Dora was willing to check us into our room. This all before the check-in time since the room hadn't been in use the night prior to our arriving. While standing with Dora there at the counter, she radioed John C. to see if he could explain the amenities and help us into our room. His reply was far beyond pleasant and made us and other guests in the lobby very uncomfortable. Certainly not a welcome we were looking for as we were celebrating our ten year anniversary. John C made it clear that we were putting a halt to what he was involved in and was sure to mention we were lucky to be checked in early. He met us in the lobby then led us directly to our room while rambling through the amenities pointing in multiple directions. He muttered through so quickly we weren't sure if we were speaking to an auctioneer or an innkeeper. Before leaving us at our room John questioned whether we could handle two keys. Then insisted if we lost one of those room keys it was going to be a charge of $75. - need I mention that on the Notice to Guests posted on the wall the figure was $50. Planning a wedding? This facility has a mere private man made beach which is shared with an open-air bar where stragglers from Duval Street are welcome to stroll in anytime. We've stayed in hotels and motels which were far less stuffy than this facility. Do yourself a favor and save your money - stay in a Key West Bed and Breakfast! Take a short ride to Smathers Beach where there is lots of room to stretch out. It was a breath of fresh air when we checked out of the Dewey House!

My girlfriend and I returned last week from nine nights staying at La Mer & Dewey House - and quite simply could not find fault with it. All the other reviews are spot on....the location, staff, ambience, rooms and service are first rate.
Beautiful small guest house type hotel, but don't let that fool you - on the whole the rooms are a good size and each have their own individual features. We were lucky enough to stay in two different rooms during our stay and I would have been happy to live in both forever! Right on the beach (and one of very few properties in Key West that are) you also have access to the Southernmost Hotel's pools, if you don't fancy the beach and sea.
Top Tip: If you find sitting in the sun on the beach or round the pool too hot, go and try the supremely comfortable (and free!) sunloungers out on the pier (again only yards away). There's always a breeze blowing there and it provides welcome relief, but watch the burn.
Afternoon tea is included and is ideal....light pastry and cheese snacks, along with excellent coffee and tea. This is surpassed only by breakfast.....which is everything you could wish for in this warm climate. La Mer & Dewey is hosted by Innkeeper John (and ably assisted by Randall) - seek John out for a world of advice on things to do....or even just a friendly chat!
In summary - a brilliant holiday. Loved the hotel and perfect for relaxing break....as well as being close enough to the action if you want something more uptempo!
We will be back!

We searched and searched the web for a great hotel in Key West after booking our frequent flyer tickets to Key West. We found the La Mer And Dewey house on Trip Advisor. We called and made reservations directly through the hotel and were given a better rate than what was on line. They booked us in room 416 for our trip. It was on the ground floor with this porch that looked and opened up directly to this beautiful white sand beach with palm trees. It was private, secluded and very romantic. The room was a little small but the view well made up for that. It was very clean and well maintained. The staff is INCREDIBLE! - funny friendly and accommodating. We had a wonderful 8-day stay. John and Randall are both great host for breakfast making great waffles and pointing you to all the good places to see. Their are NO waves on the beach because of the coral reef seven miles off shore so the water is calm, clear and shallow. You can see the fish swimming around your legs. And yes there is seaweed but you get used to it and they have a tractor that clears the beach daily. Actually we ended up favoring the pier for sunbathing so we could catch the breeze in the hot and muggy month of August -- (love it)

Some thing you must do while in Key West are go the Butterfly Conservatory around the corner, eat key lime pie on a stick, take a day trip to the Dry Tortugas (Garden Key) for snorkeling (WOW!!), have dinner at Latitudes at sunset on Sunset Key (WOW What a sunset!!), rent a car and drive 30 miles north to Bahia Honda National Park, and eat at Blue Heaven in Bahama Village with the chickens.

We did not know what to expect out of this trip to Key West and were a little apprehensive from what we had been told by some people. Thankfully we found the right place to stay and decided to venture out and do some non-traditional tourist things which all added up to one of the best vacations we have ever had. Not a bad way to celebrate 21 years together.
