We searched and searched the web for a great hotel in Key West after booking our frequent flyer tickets to Key West. We found the La Mer And Dewey house on Trip Advisor. We called and made reservations directly through the hotel and were given a better rate than what was on line. They booked us in room 416 for our trip. It was on the ground floor with this porch that looked and opened up directly to this beautiful white sand beach with palm trees. It was private, secluded and very romantic. The room was a little small but the view well made up for that. It was very clean and well maintained. The staff is INCREDIBLE! - funny friendly and accommodating. We had a wonderful 8-day stay. John and Randall are both great host for breakfast making great waffles and pointing you to all the good places to see. Their are NO waves on the beach because of the coral reef seven miles off shore so the water is calm, clear and shallow. You can see the fish swimming around your legs. And yes there is seaweed but you get used to it and they have a tractor that clears the beach daily. Actually we ended up favoring the pier for sunbathing so we could catch the breeze in the hot and muggy month of August -- (love it)
Some thing you must do while in Key West are go the Butterfly Conservatory around the corner, eat key lime pie on a stick, take a day trip to the Dry Tortugas (Garden Key) for snorkeling (WOW!!), have dinner at Latitudes at sunset on Sunset Key (WOW What a sunset!!), rent a car and drive 30 miles north to Bahia Honda National Park, and eat at Blue Heaven in Bahama Village with the chickens.
We did not know what to expect out of this trip to Key West and were a little apprehensive from what we had been told by some people. Thankfully we found the right place to stay and decided to venture out and do some non-traditional tourist things which all added up to one of the best vacations we have ever had. Not a bad way to celebrate 21 years together.
