“Great place just outside the nonsense”

Douglas House

8 May 2008

My real only complain is that the bedding is very tired! I did not sleep very well there, mostly because I wasn't comfortable. This is in direct opposition to the rest of the grounds and house.

The room we had was gorgeous, spacious, comfortable and VERY clean. I was surpised at how large it was. We had a nice kitchenette, recently remodeled and attractive. There was a bar under the stairs from a next-door establishment and I never once heard them. The place is right outside the craziness of Duval street but close enough that I parked our rental car in the lot one block down and didn't see it again for 2 days.

The locals in the area sit outside and drink beer all day, they're very friendly and apparently harmless, I never felt unsafe near our hotel (mostly anywhere in KW at that).

The pool was immaculate, very pretty, and tiny, but it was always empty and we usually had the hot tub to ourselves too. The owner was friendly as well.

continental breakfast was awful, don't waste your time, not that I normally do...there are way too many great restaurants within walking distance to bother with something so trivial anyway. The tip jar was laughable.

all in all it was really nice, a unique experience, and I probably would stay there again. Very minor changes would make for a huge improvement and the owner could probably massage his rates up a bit too with said improvements.

There are two types of places to stay in Key West - huge resorts, or smaller bed and breakfasts. If you are looking for a huge resort with many amenities, this is not the place for you. My boyfriend and I went down for 4 days and three nights in mid-February. The weather was awesome - mid to high 70s and sunny everyday. The hotel is comparable to other hotels of the same price range in the area. What the hotel lacks in amenities, it makes up for in charm. Lovely hotel, clean rooms (we got the cheapest and smallest room in the hotel - very small, but we got what we paid for). GREAT location, in the middle of everything. Two pieces of advice: (1) rent bikes one day and explore the island and (2) visit the Key West Winery.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at this hotel. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and well kept. The pool was very clean and for the most part (except for the wee hours of the morning), the coffee was fresh and available all day.

The hotel is a little further away from where most of the "action" is in town which we didn't like, but some people may enjoy that aspect.

We had some issues with our room. The bed in the room was terrible, which made for a bad nights sleep. Plus the sheets appeared to be very old. The air conditioner in our room was very loud and was located right over the bed so it was difficult to ignore it when trying to go to sleep. The room was fairly clean, but there was a lot of dust on the wicker furniture and the room had a very musty smell in the room itself and in the bathroom. Plus, the room was by the pond so there were a lot of mosquitos, which made it difficult to sit on the porch without getting bit.

We stayed with friends and most of them really enjoyed their room. I believe they are trying to re-do most of the rooms, which in some cases is needed. But some of the newer rooms are beautiful.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at this hotel and we recommend it to others.

We stopped at a travel center about 30 minutes from Key West to book a night's stay in KW. We weren't planning on staying as we travel w/our dog and had been difficult finding a 'dog friendly' hotel online that was not booked. DH accomodated our needs for the 1 night stay. DH is ideally situated less than a block off Duvall St - closer to the Southernmost point end. They also have their own parking lot, however, it is a block away so glad we were traveling light. The suite we rented was way too big for our needs with living room, bedroom, full kitchen and bathroom. The TV in the bedroom was across the room from the bed - double bed - with very lumpy mattress [needed new one for sure] and sheets were probably 150 count if that? Nice, tropical setting and nice pool and spa - typical continental breakfast but there are many restaurants within walking distance to have a hearty breakfast instead. A bit on the noisy side with upstairs neighbors but it is an old house with creaky floors and doors! It was clean and staff was nice. There were many rules you had to agree to at check-in, which seemed a bit overboard but I'm not in innkeeper so guess the felt it necessary to cover all their bases of 'given' and 'common courtesy' rules. We did find several 'dog friendly' restaurants along Duvall, which was nice as well. KW is definitely a place to see but probably will never return.

We stayed 5 nights at the Doulgas House over the Christmas/New Year's break. We had the 'Peach Palm' room, which was small but nice, and a few of the suites we looked at were very nicely decorated and large. The property is spread out over several buildings. The pool area is well maintained and the garden areas are lovely but very small for this size property. If you are a sun worshiper be aware that there is very limited sun and few lounge chairs by the pool. Breakfast is basic but adequate. We have stayed at many inns in Key West and found the staff to be fairly cool and distant compared to other places. The location was a disadvantage for us as we tend to spend time around the wharf, but if you like the far end of Duval St. with its many galleries, LaTeDa, etc. the Douglas House is ideal. We watched the 'Sushi Shoe Drop' on New Year's Eve and we could walk back and forth easily from the Douglas House.
