Simonton Street Beach has never really been considered a beach here. It is a tiny piece of sand that has been occupied by the homeless population for years. We stopped in very briefly just to see what was happening. It didn't take long to realize there was no reason to stay. If you want to see the sunset, go to Mallory Square or Fort Zach. If you just want to go to the beach try Smathers beach or Fort Zach. Even Higgs beach is occupied by many homeless and they can become aggressive in their panhandling. The last time we tried to grill there we had five strangers begging for food. We gave it all to them and went home. Not a pleasant experience. Recently the city has taken an interest in giving Higgs Beach a faceleft and I believe that is scheduled to begin fairly soon. It used to be a great place for families with the park and pavillion. It really is a shame what the homeless have done to many parts of our fair island. Actually I shouldn't call them the homeless. These are simply the drinking, smoking bums who give the other hardworking homeless people a bad name. We have a high percentage of homeless simply because housing is so expensive here. Many of the people who are homeless are your servers and your housekeepers. Please don't label them all bums. Most of them are simply hardworking folks trying to get ahead.
