The old saying 'you get what you pay for' is definitely true in this case, and we paid roughly $40 / £20 per night.
Some might call it rustic, but I call it very, very basic. Our room had exposed brick walls, the cold grey kind - not very attractive. The floor throughout was the school toilets kind. The wardrobe consisted of a rusty bar attached to the wall and the fan hung from the ceiling from a rusty chain and the curtains had holes in. There were only two lamps in this room, so it was very dark and dingy. A bit like a prison cell almost. You could also hear everything going on in the next door room - and I mean everything!
However, it was clean and the staff were friendly.
There was a good bar serving OK food behind the motel park, which overlooked the bay. Good for breakfast as well. It was at it's busiest at sundown - a beautiful sight. Bizarrely, it closed at around 10pm. As there was nothing else within walking distance that left us a bit bored in the evenings.

I've stayed here (at both motels) many times over the years and have always found them quite inviting.

This is a Mom and Pop type operation, but that is in no way demeaning. It does mean that it's friendly, quiet, pretty secure and clean. Also it means you won't be paying $200 night to stay here.

The grounds are well kept and neat. The rooms are always clean, as is the bedding. They have people who come in to clean the rooms each day and they do a nice job.

The rooms are not fancy, but they are old times Keys with wooden beam ceilings and painted floors. There are color TV's with basic cable in each room and usually a small refrigerator. You can get a room with a kitchen if you like.

I do not need a fancy place every time I'm in the Keys, but I do want something that is clean, quiet and convenient and this place fits the bill. It takes me back to my days in Great Lakes and the places I stayed in when I was younger.

My only complaint is that I'm a pretty big guy and the towels could be bigger.

Right next door the Lorelei restaurant and bar. Great food and good music. And it's just down the road from Mangrove Mike's for breakfast.

If you are a high end kind of person, this may not be the place for you, but if you love a value, want the homey comfort of the old time Keys and just a real nice place, this is it.

After reading some of the reviews for here , I was pretty apprehensive . I need not have worried , the trailer park that is mentioned , it's literally 6/8 trailers that are well maintained and lived in by local workers .
Debbie who is in charge was a really nice lady , when I mentioned we had a teenager with us , she gave us a pass for the local recreation park 4 miles away...Founders Park . They had a great beach with peddleboats , kayaks and small boats for hire , showers and very clean toilets , a large heated pool ( small charge for guests , $3 for the whole day ) soccer field , baseball pitch and walking trail . It was a godsend for our child and we spent two days there in total peace .
The rooms at the Blue Fin were a great size , with a small kitchen area and it was all spotless ... we couldn't fault it at all .
Dispite being just off the main road through the Keys , we never heard the traffic at all , infact we heard nothing from outside .
Don't be put off by the other reviews , Debbie was a helpful host , the rooms were large , extremely clean and the Haitian cleaning lady was lovely, plus it had a small onsite coin laundry .If I returned to the Keys I would more than likely stay here again .

“Make sure you don't get the 'brick rooms'”

Just returned from the keys where we had a 2 night stay at this motel. This motel is basically two motels together - both with parking directly outside the rooms. A nice man checked us in and we were given "room 3" in the building near the office. We were horrified!!!! - the room was four grey bare brick walls, with a concrete floor and large black plastic dust bin in the room - the bathroom looked like a toilet block from a brownie/scout camp !!! Just couldn't have stayed there - it was like entering an old garage - if it was that or the car we would have chosen to sleep in the car.

We went back to reception and this time saw the lady and asked to see a room at the other property next door - as we had already seen through the window that they looked normal - with plaster and paint on the walls !!! With much annoyance and attitude as we dared not to like our room she eventually after being quite rude marched across the drive to show us another room. Although basic we found this room to be fine. The lady was definitely not happy with us, and couldn't understand why we hated the room - said it was grey coral - but that sounds nice - so think grey breeze block instead - as there was nothing remotely nice about it at all !!! (Any Brits reading this will understand what I mean by breeze block - any US folk just translate to grey dusty drab rough brick)

In the "better" room - which icidently is the same rate - the floor is tiled - there are no carpets and the bathroom is not 4 star but it was acceptable for a couple of nights - the fridge is also in the bathroom which is a bit strange - but you can see why as the bathroom is quite big and so it makes sense. Plenty of soap but make sure you take the shampoo etc from the hotel you stay in before this - as none is provided .Room was cleaned both days and we had no complaints on cleanliness - and we saw no bugs which I was worried about being on the ground floor. Air con was good. Hanging space very basic and limited, but drawer space good. Rooms have 2 double beds, TV, a table and 2 chairs.

All in all, as long as you get a room with "proper walls" it is very o.k. for the price. The view outside is pretty poor and a bit shabby - especially the trailer bit but for a couple of nights it is fine. Location is good and there are several places to eat a short drive away - or burger king just across the road. We went to the Outback steak house which was execellent - just a few miles further down towards Key West - which by the way, is easily driven to/from in the day.

Wish I had taken a picture of the first room - could have certainly amused many with it !!

We were allowed to check into our rooms early and were pleased with the friendly service and clean rooms. We had fished the night before and were able to freeze our catch in the small frig/freezers provided. I've never stayed anywhere that didn't have carpet so the bare floor took some getting used to. I just kept the flip flops handy! What else would you wear in the Keys anyway? Our 81 year old father had a small room he simply adored. I would definitely recommend staying here for a good nights sleep, friendly staff and very reasonable prices. We couldn't figure out how to use the ceiling fan, but the A/C was very adequate for the how hot it was.
