“Flea Bag”

Key Lantern Motel and Blue Fin Inn

27 Feb 2008

Now, I knew this was going to be a "Mom & Pop" motel from the 1950's, but it was worse than I expected. Springs popped through the bed, so I had to buy a sleeping bag to put over the mattress. The place was old and dirty, the chairs were filthy with stains, I wouldn't even sit on them. No one is maintaining this place, which has a Great location. The windows wouldn't open, and the air conditioner was full of dirt and dust, so I had to leave the front door open for air. Never again.

We stayed at Key Lantern for only one night, which was just as well, since the mattresses sagged in the middle, and we didn't sleep well.

Our room had two double beds, air conditioning, ceiling fan, a large table with four chairs, two armchairs, a closet and some drawer space, There was no phone, clock, or safe. The small TV received at least 50 cable channels (not that there was anything good to watch, but that wasn't the motel's fault).

The kitchen area had a small range and oven, full-size refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, dishes, etc. There was no microwave.

The bathroom had a huge shower, but the towels were small and very thin. (The bath towels were no bigger than the hand towels.) No toiletries were provided aside from 11 miniscule bars of soap.

There is a coin laundry on the premises.

Some of the rooms face a trailer park, which might get noisy at times, though we didn't experience that problem.

Although the motel has an Internet site, you need to call to make a reservation. When reserving a room, you aren't asked for a credit card number or other guarantees, and you aren't given a confirmation number. We were nervous about this, but they did have our reservation when we arrived. When I called, I was quoted a rate of $65 (plus tax), but when we checked in we were told that the rate was $68. The difference isn't much, but we were a bit annoyed.

If a low price is your main objective, Key Lantern is the place to stay.

“Just what I wanted”

Key Lantern Motel and Blue Fin Inn

13 Feb 2008

Going from Fort Lauderdale to Key West, my girlfriend were stopping for a night to do some diving in the Key Largo area. We were looking for someplace inexpensive, clean and quiet, and the Key Lantern Inn met those needs.

It is not a resort, so the amenities found in resorts do not exist - no pool, no restaurant, and no coffee maker in the room. If you want those things look elsewhere. The room we had was quiet, the beds were clean and comfortable, and there was ample room to store luggage, dive gear, and other stuff without feeling crowded, and without tripping over things.

“You get what you pay for!”

The old saying 'you get what you pay for' is definitely true in this case, and we paid roughly $40 / £20 per night.
Some might call it rustic, but I call it very, very basic. Our room had exposed brick walls, the cold grey kind - not very attractive. The floor throughout was the school toilets kind. The wardrobe consisted of a rusty bar attached to the wall and the fan hung from the ceiling from a rusty chain and the curtains had holes in. There were only two lamps in this room, so it was very dark and dingy. A bit like a prison cell almost. You could also hear everything going on in the next door room - and I mean everything!
However, it was clean and the staff were friendly.
There was a good bar serving OK food behind the motel park, which overlooked the bay. Good for breakfast as well. It was at it's busiest at sundown - a beautiful sight. Bizarrely, it closed at around 10pm. As there was nothing else within walking distance that left us a bit bored in the evenings.
