My family stayed at the Islander in early November for 3 nights. I give it an "above average" review because of the value that you get for your money, we paid about $130/night after AAA discount. The hotel was very satisfactory, w/ a full kitchenette, 2 double beds, closet space, a TV, a screened in porch, an outside "patio" w/ only 1 lounge chair (2 would be better) and a shared charcol grill outside the room. All the rooms seem to be close to the pool and the beach area, there was an outdoor restaurant that had daily specials (we didn't eat there except for key lime pie which was good). The staff was helpful, and the continental breakfast was a nice touch, but just for cereal and bagels, the fruit left alot to be desired. The location of the hotel was great, and we saw dolphins swim by and also saw a small squid go along the stairs to the snorkling spot. There are a lot of great things to do in the area, but our favorite day trip was Robbie's which was about 1.5 miles south on the right. They have wild Tarpon that hang out there, it costs $2 to go in, and $3 a bucket of fish if you wish to feed the tarpon, but beware of the pelicans! We had so much fun there, we went everyday to feed the fish and just to hang out. My husband and 9 year old son went fishing w/ Chris, who docks his boat at Robbie's and my son caught 23 keepers yellow-tail snapper and my husband had a 9 foot nurse shark on the line. After their fishing trip, Chris came to the dock to pick up me and my 13 year old daughter and took us for a ride through the mangroves. Another thing we did every night of our stay was tuck the kids in to watch TV for a while so we could go to Lor-e-lei which was across the highway from the Islander. It was a fun place and had happy hour specials. The local's favorite restaurant, which we went to w/ our fresh catch was Lazy Day's, and it was very good. The Hungry Tarpon, just in front of Robbie's, was also good, my favorite was the seared tuna w/ rice and beans. The atmosphere we felt in Islamorada was very friendly and laid back.
