I stayed at this property for 3 weeks in February. I stayed mostly in the ‘Tiki-Hut’ (it was only $69/night) but spent a few days in Suite 3 and a few in Suite 4. My entire stay was totally awesome! This is truly one of the most unique places I’ve stayed and the owner, Thorn is such a nice lady! She has a lot of interesting stories so you should definitely spend some time talking with her if you aren’t too busy enjoying all of the awesome opportunities that Islamorada and the Florida keys have to offer.
Since I was there for 3 weeks, I learned the history of the property. It was purchased as a small house with very little landscaping about 20 years ago and the owner has slowly added on to it adding lots of different decorations and growing a beautiful garden.
The Tiki-Hut is a very small room but for the price, it can’t be beat. Each morning, I walked from my little hut across the deck to the bathroom which is shared with Suite 4 and by the time I was done getting ready, I had a hot breakfast waiting for me on the deck. Breakfast varied from eggs to banana pancakes, to homemade yogurt and granola but it was always very nice and I was always content. They also served orange juice, tea, and coffee with breakfast everyday. On a side note, the bed was very comfortable and the A/C was ice cold. My only complaint is that the TV had a bit of a fuzzy signal but overall it worked.
Sharing a bathroom and having a small room is no issue for me but if you need more space and a private bathroom, any of the other rooms other than the Tiki-hut or Suite 4 will be great. As I mentioned, I stayed in Suite 3 which has it’s own private patio area with a couch and table where you get your breakfast. Again the beds were comfortable and the A/C ice cold. There is also a ton of floor space so you can spread out and enjoy yourself.
My favorite room (although I never stayed there) is the Secret Garden room which has a shower that opens up to a private garden outside. It sounds kinda strange until you see it and realize that it’s probably pretty cool.
If you have a bicycle, definitely bring it to Islamorada as there is a paved bike path that runs almost the entire length of the keys and can be picked up a block away from Casa Thorn. Be careful on the bridges as the bike path isn’t complete on most of them yet.
Finally, I’ve seen some negative reviews on this site, in particular, related to mosquitoes. Most of them are completely ridiculous. If you go to the Florida Keys in the summer (or any time of the year) there are absolutely going to be mosquitoes. There are no mosquitoes or any other bugs in the rooms (at least the rooms I stayed in) and every morning, the outside of the entire property is sprayed for mosquitoes which kills about 95% of them. You can have a lame vacation and stay in some mega resort where you don’t even know what city your in or you can save your money and stay in the Casa Thorn a real Florida Keys Gem where you’ll get a taste of what the Florida Keys are really all about. Stay in Casa Thorn. I’m telling you, you’ll be glad you did!
