“The Sheraton Miami Mart Needs a Makeover”

Miami Mart Airport Hotel

San Francisco, California
19 Jun 2008

I had hoped that the Sheraton brand would live up to my expectations based on past stays. While I had a decent enough stay at the Miami Mart, it is begging for makeover. On the night I arrived, I was not given a key to my room, and on the first day of my stay, I had to enlist the aid of a bellman each time that I needed to enter my room because the digital key card machine had malfunctioned. After a long day's travel and some nighttime obligations, I headed to my room around midnight, disrobed, and entered the bathroom to shower, only to find a clogged tub with standing water in it. Since they could not fix the problem that evening, I was moved up to the club floor to another room, which was underwhelming to say the list. Actually, the standard room with the bad tub had a better feel than this one. Still, I remained. The rooms did not smell very fresh, and I discovered blood stains on the light switches in my bathroom. Finally, unless you have a car or don't mind eating daily in the hotel restaurant, this hotel is not the place to be. The closest eateries are about 20-25 minutes away in walking distance. Still, the Sheraton can boast about its comfy beds, and I did sleep like a queen. For the price charged, though, I'd consider other hotels.

“Unremarkable, but nice”

Miami Mart Airport Hotel

Phoenix, Arizona

This Sheraton is an older, but well maintained hotel. It's very convenient to those wanting to stay near the airport, a fact not lost on the airlines (a sign in lobby advises airline employees where to check in).

The most remarkable feature of the room was darkness. After sunset, all light in the room comes from three 75 watt bulbs. The result was three spots of light in a mostly dark room. Lighting was not adequate for work or reading unless one sits directly under one of the lamps. Retrieving something from the luggage--opened on the floor since no luggage racks were provided--would require a flashlight, if one had packed one, and if one could find it in the dark.

Rooms were clean and nicely maintained. Bedding includes one blanket and a heavy comforter. One wonders why Sheraton finds a comforter an essential part of their bedding even in Miami. Kudos to Sheraton for using a fitted bottom sheet, which stayed in place when the top sheet was pulled out, and even covered the bottom of the mattress. (Incredibly, we've found that a number of pricey hotels often make the bed with bottom sheets which are too short to reach the foot-end of the mattress.) Four pillows were provided on each of the two queen sized beds.

Bath was of adequate if not overly generous size, with a mirrored counter just outside which could be used for make-up application. Consistent with the rest of the room, lighting in the makeup area was dim--we had not realized that it was possible to obtain fluorescent tubes providing such little light output. The bathroom light was brighter. Shampoo had larger than average label. No hand towels provided, but the other towels were of good quality. Very good hair dryer.

Snacks were hawked in an interesting lighted window display above a refrigerator dedicated to the sale of overpriced beverages. Fortunately, the light did shut off after a few minutes.

We paid $80/room/night through a blind priceline.com bid. Self parking was $7/night additional, and valet parking was $12/night.

“Isolated But Nice”

Miami Mart Airport Hotel

Saint Paul, Minnesota

On night (Sunday) pre-cruise. Free shuttle to hotel was a little confusing as they pick-up up on the ticketing level at MIA. Waited about 30 minutes. Arrived a bit early but were allowed to check-in. Everything was as expected on Priceline reservation. Sunday buffet was still in restaurant and was a fairly good deal so we ate there for lunch. Room was nice. Clean and all the usual stuff. Fairly good sized room. Staff was super friendly and helpful.

The hotel is really isolated in a business park setting just south of the airport runways. No noticable airport noise. After large late lunch we did not want a big dinner so walked to Chevron gas station next door and got a six-pack of beer, tuna spread and crackers for dinner. There is a sort of mall attached with fast food and a Starbucks but everything was closed on Sunday. All the stores tended to be import & international items.

Pool area looked nice and there IS a wheelchair ramp that avoids the stairs but it is not marked and hard to find over on the "left" side of the bar and to the right of the main entrance. Hot tub was barely warm.

Found that there was no flat rate to cruise port like over at the airport but fare was only a few dollars more so it did not pay to shuttle back to airport to catch a cab.

All in all an OK place to stay one night before a cruise and should be available for bids under $100 in 3* category. Only problem is isolation from restaurant or entertainment options. Note...hotel is leaving Starwood group so may not be a Sheraton in near future.

“Dramatic Public Spaces and Comfortable Room”

Conveniently located near MIA with shuttles every half hour. Spacious pool area with whirlpool, though neither was heated during my stay. There are no dining options within walking distance except Starbucks and Au Bon Pain in Miami Mart itself. Though both close early, you can assemble a simple meal, buy wine or beer at the hotel store, and have dinner in your room. Otherwise you'll be stuck with the hotel's restaurant which is uninspired and typically overpriced. For more than an overnight stay, you'll definitely need a car.

“OK One-Nighter Near MIA”

Although this hotel has taken several hits in recent reviews here, I found it quite good for one night several days ago. I was returning through MIA from Brazil, overnighting in Miami before proceeding home to Seattle on an erly morning flight the next day. The room was booked through Priceline and was $80.00 inclusive -- half their rack rate and about the same as online advertised rates for 2* motels near MIA. A friend met my plane and the check-in at the hotel was uncomplicated. The room was large, clean, and well-appointed, with a first rate mattress and outstanding linens, The staff was genial and helpful, and the airport shuttle was waiting [only] for me when I came down to the lobby at 0515 the next morning. The only downside was that the requested wake-up call for 0445 never came. But, I am used to that and always have my own backup. Had the call materialized, the hotel would have been, in my view, "Excellent."
