I booked the Quality Suites Universal through a package deal on lastminutetravel.com. I checked several sites for reviews and photos before booking it. The reviews I saw were about half good and half not so good.
The reviews are right on. Most people say it's ok, but there are better options out there. I agree. The room was clean, which is the most important thing to me. We had a lot of amenities we wanted, like a refrigerator, microwave, pool, free breakfast, and a suite. The maid service was very good. Friendly employees, especially the man who works in the hotel shop in the lobby.
Our room - Much smaller than photos I saw, it had 2 double beds and a pull out sofa bed. Bathroom was clean with good water flow in the shower and plenty of towels. Two tv's, but only one remote and the one we had needed batteries. When we called the front desk, they said they had a shortage of remotes and had to limit each room to one. They had someone bring up a new remote, but they took the other one. We also asked for more pillows and were told they would check and see if they could get us 2 more. Four hours later, we had to call back and ask again, and they brought them right up. Nice armoire in the bedroom which held an iron and board. The dresser had several drawers, but they didn't close properly, and the edges of the dresser were scratched and old looking. The refigerator was nice and big, had lots of room for drinks and leftovers from eating out. Only problem - there was a smell coming from around the refrigerator. We could smell it when walking or standing by the door going into the bedroom. We didn't think it was coming from the refrigerator, but maybe behind it, or from the air conditioning, which was on the other side of the wall from the refrigerator. This smell would come and go, sometimes we could smell it, sometimes not. It was not pleasant. Smelled like something died behind the wall.
The pool - Since all the rooms face the pool, you won't escape the noise in the evening. We were on the 5th floor and it sounded like it was right outside the door. We found the best time to be at the pool was morning until about 1pm. Then the kids come out and take over. Good thing it's only open until 10pm or you wouldn't get any sleep. The pool was nice, we enjoyed it very much.
Free breakfast - decent. Better get there early though, or there won't be anything left. They make 3 huge pans of scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon or sausage, and home fries with peppers and once it's gone, that's it. There was also cereal, toast, bagels, and mixed fruit. We got down there around 7am each morning and there was always plenty of food then.
Manager's reception - went once, had two sips of a margarita, threw it out and didn't go back. But, I'm not much of a drinker either.
All in all, I was a little disappointed in the place, mostly cause it just didn't look as good as I hoped it would, but there was certainly nothing horrible about the place. The smell was a problem, but it didn't ruin our stay or anything. I would probably stay elsewhere on a return trip, but if this was all I could get, I would be ok with it.
