“Definately disappointed”

Four Seasons Resort, Palm Beach

18 Sep 2006
7/18 found this review helpful

OK so maybe i am a bit picky but really, it only applies to room cleanliness and quality. I am a little obsessive about that and i find those two things to be absolutely the most important factors i look for. That being said, this Four Seasons definitely does not cut it.
We went a few months ago, totally off season and very, very dead. Sure the service was good, and a beautiful lobby, and all that (and absolutely the BEST granola from room service). But the room just didn't have a clean feel to it. The wallpaper was peeling in the toilet room, the tiles were kinda gross, old looking counter, there was hair stuck to the wall. That being said, I wish I had complained because I am sure they would have been helpful (I just hate complaining).
I'll be going to The Breakers next month for a night so I sure hope their rooms are better. After that, I will probably end up in the currently-closed-for-renovation Ritz Carlton.

“I liked the jazz trio that played in the lounge and most everything else.”

I drove over from Naples on business. The lounge at the hotel is a great place for a bite to eat. The Susan Merritt trio plays great jazz and there is an area in the back on the lounge that is better lighted where I could work in a library type setting and have a nice meal. I had a wonderful turkey sandwich with a nice side of fruit that had blackberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermellon. The meeting facilities were average. One evening I went to the spa which has a nice whirlpool, sauna, steam room and weights. I thought the facility was very adequate and comfortable. This is my second time to this hotel, and I hope to return to it again. If you live locally, I would encourage you to stop by the lounge and hear the jazz trio. The check in and check out people were very very nice, as were the people working in the gift shop. The swimming pool was clean and the service there was execeptional. I didn't give the hotel 5 stars because I didn't like paying $21 per day parking.

“Staff is excellent, clean room, relaxing”

Four Seasons Resort, Palm Beach

We spent 6 nights at the Four Seasons Palm Beach. We have stayed there several times over the last 10 years and the service issues that they had back in 2001 seem to have been corrected. We asked for the room that we had on our honeymoon, or at least a similar one. We were told at check-in that they had a better, upgraded room for us, but it wasn’t so----it wasn’t on the 4th (highest) floor, and was facing the pool rather than outward. We immediately called and asked for a new room, which we got and we were happy. I noticed that the first room had some issues with the bathtub (rust stains, looked old). When we checked out, the person at the desk apologized for the room mix up.

The people working there are the best, from the doorman to the concierge---everyone was friendly and helpful. Our room was cleaned spotless twice per day and comfortable. Only one day our room wasn’t cleaned and it was 2 PM (we had been out of the room since 9:30 AM). So we called Housekeeping---they were very apologetic and it never happened again.

This is not a snooty property---it is quiet and comfortable. I would not recommend it for families except those with toddlers or with kids who are older/quiet/bookish.

The great thing about this property is that they don’t nickel and dime you for everything; I think it’s ridiculous that hotels at this level charge for a beach chair and umbrella. This property does not. Another example: in the morning the hotel has complimentary coffee near the lobby (until 8 AM) and then most of the morning by the pool.

Katrina did a number on the beach at the hotel---it’s quite a steep walk down from the top of the beach down to the water, and the sand isn’t as nice as it used to be. The sand looks better further down at the public beach at Lake Worth.

I wouldn’t want these comments to hold folks back from going to this property because it is wonderful, but because we know this property so well, here are some really nit-picky comments that I’m hoping the hotel will read:
*The L’Occitane amenities are great, but the lemon fragrance is too much like citronella candles. Lavender or a light scent would be better.
*The bathrooms have been the same for the last 10 years--- on really close inspection we could see that the floor tiles were worn (not shiny) everywhere but on the edges.
*The beach staff are wonderful, but the beach itself could use cleaning---we saw straws, cups, some newspapers, and cigarette buts more than we should have. Also, ants seem to be a problem near the vegetation at the top of the beach.

Some restaurant recommendations since it’s quite expensive to eat all meals at the hotel: John Gs (right next door for breakfast---get the almond French toast), Suite 225 (sushi in Lantana), Bimini Twist (dinner inland on Okechobee, but worth it), Middleastern Bakery (for lunch in West Palm---looks like a parking lot, but the vegetarian food is great), Too Jays (breakfast or lunch in Lake Worth), Bizarre Avenue Café (dinner, Lake Worth).

“Expected more”

We stayed at the Four Seasons for 3 nights in June and though our stay was pleasant, I really expected more from a Four Seasons property. The decor is old and outdated, and some areas of the hotel have a dank, musty smell. The staff was friendly, but the level of service was not up to par with the other Four Seasons I have been to. Also, housekeeping came late both days (after 4:00). We found the food to be mediocre as well. The pool is tiny and the pool area is very crowded.

I stayed at the Four Seasons in Maui last year and was expecting to be blown away like I was at that property. This property, while okay, was not worth $500 a night. The Four Seasons Palm Beach needs to renovate and train its staff before they could legitimately be called a four or five star resort.

My husband, 13mo old son, and I stayed aug2-9 at the palm beach four seasons. We had a very nice room, 404, that didn't look out over much but we had chosen a rate of $225/night. For the most part, service at the hotel was very good. The concierge-Lisa and Carlos-were great. Janet babysat for us 2 nights and was wonderful with our son. We were given excellant referrals to restaraunts and really enjoyed Paradiso in Lake Worth and Cafe L Europe in Palm Beach. Housekeeping was very good and the room was always very clean. Beach was ok-not great, lot of seaweed on it.
Check in went smoothly but I was dismayed that the room wasn't set up for us despite my having called ahead and confirmed the need for a crib, fridge, and childproofing of the room. They acted like it was the first they heard of it when we got to our room.
The other area of disappointment was the pool service. We specifically stayed at a resort and not a condo so that we could get food and beverages by the pool. While the pool itself is nice and the chairs comfy, getting any service at all is impossible. We went to the pool all but one day and every time we had to go to the bar to order any food or drinks. They appeared to have one server for the entire pool and beach and while he was nice enough, he clearly wasn't able to serve everyone. We spent whole afternoons laying by the pool and no one ever came and asked us if we wanted anything and then when we did ask for a server to come by, no one did. Other people seemed to have similar problems and no one came to take the remnants of lunch away and I saw other people piling up their dishes too.
We did go and tour the Breakers and had drinks at the Seafood bar. Their facility is beautiful but very large. We enjoyed the view from the bar but a 20% service charge is added to every bill. We usually tip that regardless for good service, but I would rather be given the choice. I don't know if they do that for every bill there, but something to keep in mind.
Outlet shopping at Sawgrass Mills outside Ft Lauderdale was phenomenal!!
