My wife and I took the 55 minute airboat tour on November 12, 2008. We had a coupon from the Palm Beach County for 50% off for the second ticket for a total of $82.50 for us both. Some people have indicated in their reviews that it is hard to find. Actually it is very easy, just drive west to the very end of Loxahatchee Road in Parkdale, FL. Check it out first on MapQuest. It is actually much closer to Palm Beach area than driving into the Everglades via Alligator Alley (I-75). A few signs along Loxahatchee Road would certainly have been helpful.
It was quiet in November and we had only 7 on our airboat. The lady at the ticket booth said they get over 300 in the busy seasons. It appears that they have two larger airboats and one smaller one. The seats are stepped up in rows and the visibility is excellent from anywhere on the boat. Over the ear muffs are provided and should be used. Life jackets weren't offered and not really required. The boat really doesn't get going too fast as to scare anyone.
The owner took us on our tour and was very knowledgable about the history of the Everglades and the animals that live there. He is a bit of a 'contrarian' but that was okay.
We saw 4 or 5 alligators, one in the order of 12 feet. Lots of blue herons and other birds.
The trip is exactly as advertised, an airboat tour of the Everglades. There is really not a whole lot to see but it is still a worthwhile experience, if you have never seen the Everglades, as we had never done so.
Only about half the time was spent actually at speed, the other times we stopped and the guests asked questions and Mr. Thomas explained the water systems, alligator behaviour, seasonal changes, etc. At certain locations, you could see the roof tops of the nearby residential subdivisions located near the man made levees that contain the Everglades.
They have a small museum on site, washrooms and a ticket trailer along with some snacks. There is a picnic table under one of the large trees.
One of the best features is a 60 minute DVD of the Everglades which is very well done and a great addition to the tour itself. These are given out free at the end of the tour, one to each couple or family.
My wife and I certainly enjoyed the tour, the shorter tour would still give you the same impression and save you a few dollars.
