We rented two rooms. One room was for our family of 2 adults and 2 kids ages 11 and 5. The second room was for my mother. Our room was on the 3rd floor and had a queen size bed and suposedly a pull out sofa for the kids. The pull out sofa was circa 1982 and was broken, stained, lumpy and saggy. We all had to pile in the queen bed which had a matress from around 1990 and was perhaps the worst matress I have ever slept on. (or tried to sleep on as the case may be) The toilet had a nosiy leak, the ancient air conditioner rattled and growled noisily as well and the door lock to the outside "veranda" would only lock from the inside so we were not able to use it as an entry. My mother's room had similar door lock issues and her mattress was equally horrible. The common areas were marginaly clean and the "lobby" sitting area can not be used at all as the staff use the sofa and coffee table as their computer office, soap opera watching space. Junk was scattered and strewn all about the outside of the buliding. This building has so much potential to be a GREAT hotel or B&B but it is currently a total dive. Also- the photo does not show that there is a huge beach supply store built up right next to it that completely blocks the view to the ocean- you can however sit in grungy, plastic rocking chairs on the splintered deck and watch people smoking in the alely behind the store- or from the other side you get a decent view of the bay as well as the locals partying it up at a nearby bar.
Here is my advice to anyone wanting to visit beautiful st george island- go 20 more minutes down the road to the quaint town of appalachicola and stay at one of their lovely hotels- they also have fabulous restaraunts and lots of historic buildings and fishermans warf- then drive to St George and go all the way to the state park at the end of the island (turn left off the bridge) where you can find fabulous beaches without crowds and clean facilities to shower, change clothes and picnic- enjoy the wonderful beach but bypass this hotel. (or someone in the hotle bussiness.... Please buy this awesome building and fix it up!)
