Sanibel island is located right off Fort Myers which can only be accessed by a tolled bridge. ($6US as of August 2007)
Light house is located at the public beach which is closet to the bridge. Simple metallic structure stands alone by the shore makes the view ideal for a picture shot. Beach is quite shallow and low wave. Ideal for children to walk around but the water is not as clear as I would have liked.
We travelled through the while island and stopped by a few public and pprivate beaches. Each one of them possess beautiful and abundant amount of shells of all sorts and all sizes. Many of those you thought you can only purhase from stores are all available for your pick.
Many Seagulls so do be careful.
Water: Water is warm in August but not clear at all. I was hoping for crystal clear water and did not sea it. Perhaps it is due to the season.
As we move toward captiva island which is connected through bridge with Sanibel, we were hoping for nicer beaches and clearer water.............not exactly.
Beach lover: Perhaps month of august is not the best time to go. I prefer Barbados or Thailand's crystal water. But it is still quite impressive to have warm shallow wave water right by Florida west coast.
Shall lovers: We have travelled around the world and never seen a plce with such abundance of shells. We came home with a whole bag load of shells. Just beautiful! Just be careful, some of them can still be occupied so do make sure picking up ones that is empty.
Parking: $2.50/ hr parking at all public beach. Street parking is not allowed any where so do prepare to pay even after the toll.
Lodging: Many hotels and inns along the way and last week of august seem to be low season so most of them have vacancy signs out. We checked with one 3 star and priced at $150/ night. I thought it was a bit pricy for amenities offered and steep local food and restaurant prices.
Restaurants: Did not eat in any but checked out some menus. Do prepare to pay $15-20 even for lunch for some places that seem normal. I strongly suggest grab some prepared food from Albertson right before access to Sanibel and have a picnic by the beach. Beautiful view and a great site!
