“Hotel Ranola, a gem in the heart of downtown Sarasota”

My husband and I made an impromptu visit to Sarasota to view mid-century modern homes recently and on the way, we discovered a gem of a hotel located in the heart of downtown. Charming modernism and eclectic is the best way to describe this 9-room hotel. We enjoyed the location immensely, for you are within steps of Main Street. We also loved the custom decor and thought the room was laid out nicely. Converting these former apartments allows for a sitting area with a separate kitchen, bathroom and closet space. My favorite feature was the make-up/dressing table for the ladies and the Rusk bathroom products. They even have books for your reading pleasure. You definitely feel right at home and super comfortable at this boutique hotel. We would highly recommend the Hotel Ranola to anyone who likes unique hotels. Plus, the couple that operates the hotel is so friendly and nice. One stay and you'll want to return time and time again like us.

We spent a few days at the Hotel Ranola as part of a long weekend getaway. We certainly found the hotel to be interesting and different, although not always in a good way.

The hotel is a former old three-story apartment building, and you can tell. We reserved one of the suites, and it reminded me of an old one-bedroom apartment that many of my friends used to have when we were in our 20s. The suite certainly was spacious as far as a typical hotel room goes, complete with a full living room and a full-service kitchen. It appeared that they left most of the old apartment fixtures and features as is, which gives it some charm I guess. But I still mostly felt like I was staying in an old apartment and not a hotel, complete with a cramped bathroom with an old combination tub/shower, window air-conditioners and creaky old wooden floors. But the room has been spruced up a bit with some modern furniture and artwork, a flat-screen TV and wifi Internet (which worked only intermittently, I should add).

The biggest problem I had with the Ranola was the noise. I tend to be sensitive to noise when I sleep, and the noise at the Ranola prevented me from getting a good night's sleep while we were there. Our suite was on the first floor on the side of the building that faces directly onto Ringling Blvd., which is a busy street with loud traffic at all hours of the day and night. To make matters worse, kids on skateboards seem to like going back and forth endlessly in front of the building, and we were awakened by skateboarders around 2 a.m. one morning. The air conditioners were also quite noisy, and one of them made loud dripping sounds all night long (I think it was dripping outside onto some kind of hard metal below). So if noise is a concern for you, I'd recommend that you request a room in the back side of the hotel (the side that is opposite of Ringling Blvd.) on the second or third floor.

I guess the best thing about the Ranola was its location. You are within easy walking distance of a lot of nice restaurants, shops, galleries and a few theaters along Main Street or on one of the many side streets off Main Street, and it's a quick drive over to St. Armand's Circle and the beaches. We also enjoyed walking to the nice downtown Farmers Market that is held every Saturday at Main St. & Lemon Ave. The downtown Sarasota area seems to be starting to come alive, and it is certainly a nice alternative to the toursity St. Armand's Circle area or the even more touristy beach resorts.

And if you want to stay in downtown Sarasota, your options seem to be pretty limited right now. There's the Ritz-Carlton on the very high end and some cheap motels on the very low end, but few nice alternatives in the middle. The Ranola fits that middle niche, so for that reason alone I guess I might recommend the hotel with some caveats. I don't think we'd stay there again, but if you want to stay downtown and are looking for a middle-of-the-road option I'd feel OK about recommending the Ranola - as long as you're comfortable with the drawbacks and cautions I've mentioned here.

In the past, if you didn't want to stay at the beach, there was no reasonable quality alternative in downtown Sarasota. The Hotel Ranola is a former apartment building that has been recently converted. It addresses the needs of those who enjoy being able to walk to the downtown amenities in Sarasota. The owners have decorated the rooms in a modern style while keeping the character of the 1920s architecture. Each room has a sitting area and a fully-equipped kitchen. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful and there is ample off-street parking. A five minute walk brings you all the best of Main Street where you can shop, dine, sip coffee, or browse through the galleries. Overall, the Ranola is a true gem!

My boyfriend and I spent 4 nights in June to celebrate my 21st birthday. Since the owners are the staff and we were coming from out of town, we had to call to make sure they would be at the desk when we got there. The owners are very nice! It was actually a surprise for my boyfriend and he loved it! I was so impressed! There was plenty of room! Downtown Sarasota was a couple small blocks away! He even got his car aligned one morning and then walked the block back to the room! There's a movie theater and an Applebee's a little further up the block! It was a little noisy during the day, but the upstairs was still apartments! If you want something different from your everyday hotel, this place is great!! I was really a place we could feel comfy at! We'd ride/walk around Sarasota for a while, come back take a nap, and then head out for the evening! We loved it and can't wait to go back!

We spent only one night there - REALLY wish we could have lingered in Sarasota for a few more days. The hotel and staff/owners are great!! The city is really nice - if you like arts and culture.

A quick plug for the local botanical gardens - go there.
Also a plug for the restaurant called Lan, a few short blocks from the Ranola on Main St - yum yum yum.

Will stay here again for sure.
