This was a five day/four night vacation stay in mid-October. Had Mrs. Gardiner, Kiddo and Dad along.
I had booked us a studio unit (we’re not DVC members), and then Dad agreed to join us at the last minute, so booked another studio unit. Interestingly, prices were cheaper on Travelocity than on the Disney website… ($159 vs $170/nt). Ditto through Amex Travel, but not on Expedia. Curious.
I called ahead to ask if we could get adjoining, or at least adjacent, rooms, and found on check-in that this was accomplished. We had a room in the Inn, the main building, which made access to restaurant, bar, pool, everything, much simpler for Dad. That may also have changed the quality of the units for our visit…
Check in was efficient, and attention lavished on Kiddo. Coloring pages, crayons, activity schedules… wow.
Our rooms were equivalent to a Marriott 1.0, or a really well done Holiday Inn. Muddled pattern bedspreads with questionable provenance and cleaning. Rooms certainly clean, although not lavish. No desk, just a cocktail table… but then it’s not supposed to be a business hotel. Bathrooms sparkled, with Disney label toiletries. Microwave, coffeemaker and mini-fridge rounded things out. TV was tube-style, but that’s fine… not here to watch TV.
Only issue… it all looked a bit worn. For a hotel, intentionally and intensively, designed by Disney to look like a turn-of-the-century Florida resort, most everything looked pretty authentic, down to orange crate labels and meticulously weathered hardwood floors. Regretably, the rooms had a similar patina… but I don’t think that was planned… I think it was wear and tear without renovations.
There was wifi available in the lobby area only, and there was routinely a meeting of the “Daddy Club” (as Kiddo called it) every afternoon around 4 or so, when six to ten Dad’s and Mom’s (mostly Dads) convened on the various couches and chairs to check emails… No business center, and did not try to print anything. When my laptop hiccupped on their IP address, a quick query at the front desk brought out the head of IT, who handled my tech issue effortlessly.
Food was fully acceptable, albeit expensive. We had breakfast in Shutters each morning, including the Character Breakfast on Saturday (only two characters there: Goofy and Donald). Ate dinner one night, and was stunned at the pricing, so we started heading out. If you don’t have a car here, you are at the mercy of the Mouse on food and food costs.
As other posters have mentioned, there is a Publix and a Walgreen’s a short drive away… beer, wine, soft drinks, etc., can all be had there much cheaper than at the hotel.
(Side note on off-property restaurants: We hit Capt Hiram’s and Squid Lips, both on the water in Sebastian, and were pleased with service, food and prices at both. We ate at Squid Lips twice, really good food, value priced wine list, and a delightful Hong Kong-native hostess… M’goi sai, ma’am! We ate at Ocean Grill down in Vero Beach proper and found it ok, but not worth the cost.)
We bought the $11.99 all-you-can-drink mug, and that was smart. We had free coffee in the mornings, and free softdrinks all day at the pool. Well worth the investment.
The pool grill was good and VERY fast. At lunch, though, there could be a bit of a line. Tip: If the line is long there, and you only want drinks, head up to the Green Cabin Bar, and bring them back to the pool. Or, if you want lunch with quiet and a view, though, sit on the Green Cabin Bar porch, order drinks there (food menu there is limited), and then carry your food up from the Pool Grill.
Kids activities were superb… Disney does this well. From the Cookie Class to the campfire singalongs, Kiddo enjoyed every second… still singing the Button Factory song four weeks later! Employees… oops, Cast Members were uniformly warm and friendly with both my Dad and Kiddo.
Beach was nice, quiet area. At the time we were there the riptide was pretty strong, so we focused on sandcastles. Beach chair rentals were silly-priced, so we just sat on our towels.
Pool was nice, and heavily lifeguarded (which is good).
Must recognize three employees there who really impressed me. Mike, a grandfatherly type who surfaced as Chef Mike in a cookie decorating class and again as Matey Mike, leading a terrific treasure hunt through the lobby. I can only hope that my retirement will be as fun-filled as his, and that I’ll be as happy as he seems to be. Isa, a delightful Belgian transplant to Florida, was wonderful, and most helpful. Finally, I have to note a tall young man, whose name I didn’t get, who loaded bags for three adults and Kiddo in our rooms, onto a cart, walked with me to my rental car in the garage, loaded everything in the back of the SUV, and then refused a tip… I’ve been in a lot of hotels, in a lot of places, and he was the first bellman to refuse a tip. John, I think???
