Not only does it contain fabulous large scale objects like mummies and the gorgeous Assyrian gates, there are neat everday things too -- how about an ancient Egyptian board game, for example! Or a 5,000 year old bed? Fascinating, inexpensive and wonderful.

Add the the Museum of Science and Industry, Robie House, Jackson Park and a tour of the University of Chicago, and you have enough first-rate attractions to fill two or three days in Hyde Park without even going downtown!

I must agree with the prior review that this museum is the best kept secret in Chicago. If you are interested in the history of the middle east, you will definitley enjoy the museum. The Assyrian gallery is truly amazing.

This quiet university museum is a definte must see. We thought that it is the best kept secret in Chicago. Even our cab driver had no idea it was there! Suggested admission is only $5, but it is worth so much more! There is so much history crammed into this little space that you run the risk of missing something! We had planned about one hour for the visit and stayed for 3! From all over the ancient middle east, it is a true treasure. It contains treasure from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, israel, Sudan, Syria, and Turkey. It includes a 14ft tall statue of King Tut, a piece of the Dead Sea scrolls, the reconstructed Assyrian royal palace from Khorsabad with a 16ft tall 40 ton lamassu, and great statuary portions from Persepolis. Another highlight is the showacase of Harry Burton's photographs of the excavation of the tomb of King Tut, which is currently visitng the Oriental Institute Museum.

The surrounding area is beautiful and it is just blocks away from The Robie House! Staff were friendly as were passerbyers who stopped to tell us about local deals and shops that are unknown to most! I can't say enough about how great this visit was!
