After a delayed flight and a long drive in through rush hour we were looking forward to another great Kimpton stay and the Palomar did not disappoint.
As usual, we were welcomed upon arrival and although we didn't need it, were offered help with our bags. It's surprising how many hotels don't take this small step, but I'm glad that Kimpton still has employees that take the time to say hello. Check in was smooth and we were told about the wine hour and given our breakfast coupons.
We had booked a one bedroom suite and that's exactly what we got. Upon entering I was pleased with how spacious the room seemed. I was very glad to see the bedroom all the way back to allow a good amount of space from the hallway. The jacuzzi tub is always a great addition to relax after a long day. Like every other Kimpton this room was kept very clean and I'm always pleased that Kimpton keeps their furniture in good order.
I had booked the breakfast or cocktails for a buck rate, and we took one set of breakfast coupons and one set of cocktail coupons. Breakfast in the attached restaurant was very good. The coupons only allow for a continental breakfast and oddly do not allow for a credit off a larger breakfast. We ended up just adding some eggs to the breakfast, but I'm still curious as to why it can't just be a dollar off amount. Service was efficient and friendly. I'm a big fan of room service, but getting a whole breakfast for just the cost of some eggs was a great deal.
Now if I were to rate this stay against other Kimptons I might have to go with a 4.5. Against all other hotel chains though it's still easily a 5 star stay. I'm Inner Circle with Kimpton. All my IC amenities were delivered and delicious. The riesling we got was one of the best rieslings I've had in a while. The pretzels and dipping cheese were delicious. As expected I didn't get a category upgrade. The hotel was full and other than named suites there was only one category above me. However, I was surprised I was only on floor 9 and that the suites are placed right next to the elevators. I was also a little off put by the fact I couldn't use the breakfast coupons towards a credit, but that's probably just a Kimpton policy and not the hotel's fault. Also, like so many hotels, there are no easy to reach outlets by the bed. If you notice, these are pretty small issues. That's how good this hotel is. I have to be nitpicky to find anything wrong.
Overall though the stay was excellent. Every staff member I interacted with seemed happy to talk to me and help me out. The hotel looks great and is very clean in the rooms, halls and common areas. Next time I'm in Chicago, the Palomar will be at the top of my list once again.
