My husband, 12 year old son and I took the 'Inside the Loop: Expect the Unexpected' tour and had a great time. Although I lived in the city for years and both my husband and I are familiar with the Loop, we both visited buildings we had never been in and saw things we had never seen before. My son really enjoyed the tour as well- if you have a child who is a history buff, this is a great way to fan the flames.
I've been on other architectural tours that were more academic in nature, but this was less formal with a good combination of architectural information along with trivia, and history. Another nice point was that some adults in the group are given iPads to carry and at points in the tour while the guide lectures, you call up images and videos that help illustrate where you are. The tour size was kept fairly small, so it was easy to see the iPad.
It was excellent for February, because we were not outside a great deal, but used the Pedways (and got a very detailed map as a give away that my son cannot wait to go back to the Loop to try out) and moved through stores and buildings. We ended up at the Chicago Cultural Center, which is such a treasure for the city and after a two hour tour could easily have gone on longer. We would definitely consider taking another tour with Chicago Detours.
