We had a five day/four night stay here in conjunction with professional meetings. Mrs. Gardiner and I had Kiddo with us, so we were understandably nervous, having read the reviews posted here.
Net, we were very, very pleased.
First thing we did, since we’d read concerns about the size of the rooms was to pay an upgrade fee to get into a suite. We had a delightful suite on the 20th floor, with windows on three sides (room number 2001) of the suite. WOW. Really, really nice.
The room was very clean; linens were Crowne Plaza style (left over from the change of flags, I guess). A rollaway bed was brought for Kiddo, and fit nicely. They had Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, which was very nice.
We needed a fridge for milk and apple juice for Kiddo, and one was brought up and plugged in at no charge.
The Tap on Two was closed for renovations, and the bar and restaurant had been shoe-horned into the Lobby area. They’re forgiven for this… but I’ll peek back in once this is done.
Yes, the elevators are tiny, but they do go all the way to the street level now.
Look, the hotel is a Grande Dame. It’s old. Think Palmer House in Chicago, Tutwiler in Birmingham, Marriott East Side in NYC. If you want large rooms in Chicago, book a newer hotel or upgrade the room. Location, though, is just incredible. You know you’re on prime real estate when the street level part of the building houses Brooks Brothers. Apple’s Mich Ave store is just across the street.
Service, in every interaction, was crisp and friendly. Concierge gave great direction to terrific restaurants, and even got us a “line cutter” invite that slipped us directly past the long line at Gino’s East!
We were part of a set of three day meetings, and the banquet staff was equally crisp, responding to everything from minor A/V issues to extra bottles of water. The meetings went very smoothly, and I’d be happy to book here again.
I think I have, though, solved all of my future hotel and travel issues… by hiring one of their people. Not sure how I do this or pay for it, but I want to hire Bennis, who works at the front desk, as my personal hotel handler. I want to have this lady travel a day ahead of me, and be working the front desk at every hotel I visit anywhere in the world. (This will require some travel on her part, I suppose.) She’s that good. Heck, she could even teach the folks at the JWMarriott Hong Kong a few things! She was absolutely superb from the moment we walked into the lobby until we left. She chatted up Kiddo, helped us with directions, had leftover pizza frozen for the trip home, patiently answered questions… wow. Bennis, if you get bored at the Allerton, let me know!
Good hotel, will be better when renovations are done. Absolutely superb staff. Excellent stay.
